Some of the worlds most established horse safari specialists are in Southern Africa -- especially Botswana, Malawi, Namibia and South Africa. Please note that some of the Southern African regions' horseriding trails are only for those that are more comfortable on a horse -- notably; a safari in big 5 terrain! If you're a novice, there are some easier options where the wildlife is not likely to consider eating you (or your horse).
Riding on horseback through the wilderness has got to be one of the greatest eco-experiences. Ones elevated position, high above the pepper ticks and other nasty critters, has a distinct advantage when one is viewing animals; not only do you see more because of your height advantage, but the animals themselves are less skittish as they see rider and horse as one! Just watch out for those thorny acacia branches that seem to appear out of nowhere to swipe you across your face! ouch!
Horse based Adventure Trails (Adventure Racing) are gaining popularity.
