THE SOUTH AFRICAN DACHSHUND CLUB
Ch Legibach Impossible Dream at Waydack
- Best In Show at our Championship show
|

This will be the last edition of
E-News for 2008 so Christmas and the holidays lie ahead. We wish dachshund
owners everywhere a Very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.
Our championship show was held
on 11 October and despite the economic climate and pertol
costs there was still a very good entry with only 2 dogs down on last years
entry. We did miss some of the out of town exhibitors and appreciate the
donations sent in lieu by some. The thought of starting the show at 7am
actually worked out well and there were no clashes all day. The show
finished by 1pm which meant that everyone could compete in the groups at
TKC and get home early. Thanks to our judge Mrs
Leigh Tarr and Henk Tjeesen who ably stewarded for her. Thanks also to
exhibitors for their co-operation and we trust you enjoyed the show.
This ofcourse
meant a very early start for the committee but with everyone working
together the show was ready to start on time. The catering team of
Daelene and her mother together with contributions from the committee
provided enough food to feed everyone all day. Thanks also to our sponsors
particularly Eukanuba who were very generous with
their prizes. Best In Show was won by Bruce Jenkins Standard Smooth, Ch Legibach Impossible Dream to Waydack,
Imp USA,
Reserve BIS to the Standard Long Chadamyle Paso Doble
of Lightfoot owned by Tracey Dorrington, Best Veteran to Ch Nibelheim Largamente, the Standard Long owned by Gerard
Robinson and Best Puppy to Judy Bird with her Standard Long, Elveden Betty Blue. By all accounts a great day for
Standard Longs.
Something I picked up in a UK
paper where the falling entries in some varieties was discussed and it was
suggested that breeders in the popular varieties each take one of the less
popular variety, preferably a bitch, show it and breed a litter hopefully
for show people to buy and in this way try and get more of that variety in
the ring. Would something like this work here?
Below is an article on the first
ever biliary vaccination. Costed
at the vet the price is high but for owners with dogs at risk it probably
is worth the cost.
Thanks to everyone who supported
the annual raffle. The winners were Nicoleen
Maas, Wendy Davies and Helen Able(Tsouroulis)
On a lighter note for people who
like to shop or sleep with their dogs, Mr Price
has pyjama shorts for men with a dachshund design
and the club has a very nice shopping bag with two dachshunds on it for
sale and will make a great Christmas gift.

Vaccinate with Nobivac® Piro to
further aid in beating biliary
Biliary (or as is casually referred to
as “tickbite fever”) in dogs in South Africa
is mostly caused by the parasite named Babesia
canis rossi (or in
short B. rossi) that are transmitted by
infected yellow dog ticks. B. rossi frequently results in fatal infections, even
after treatment. The classical signs
of biliary in dogs include listlessness, loss of
appetite, fever, pale gums and inner eyelids, jaundice (yellow
discolouration of the gums and inner eyelids) and even red coloured
urine. However, during a survey
approximately 26% of veterinary practitioners in South Africa
regarded the atypical or complicated form of biliary
in dogs as common. This form
includes multiple organ dysfunction and may
involve any of the following organs:
kidneys, liver, lungs, brain, stomach and intestines, pancreas,
muscle and immune system. These
complicated cases do not simply recover with initial biliary
treatment. These complicated cases
need to be admitted and may need costly additional intensive care which may
include long term hospitalisation.
Approximately 10 to 12% of admitted cases die and 2 to 3 % require
euthanasia.
Historically rigid tick control
was the only means of protecting dogs against biliary. Fortunately we have entered a new era
where vaccination is possible. Nobivac® Piro (Reg No. G3755 Act 36/1947, N-SR 1368) is the first biliary vaccine in South Africa. The vaccine contains soluble parasite
antigens (SPAs) of B. rossi
and B. canis. The vaccine therefore does not contain
the actual babesia parasites. SPAs are toxic
substances that are released by the babesia
parasites, and these SPAs are responsible for the
signs seen as well as the multiple organ dysfunction
seen in the atypical or complicated form of biliary. Multiple organ dysfunction results from
the SPAs that induce the clumping together of red
blood cells and therefore small blood clots, decreased blood pressure,
decreased blood flow and oxygen supplementation to organs. By vaccinating
with Nobivac® Piro,
the vaccine induced immunity protects against the effects of SPAs following biliary
infection in vaccinated dogs. The
vaccine is therefore indicated to reduce the severity of biliary signs.
In a local trial that was done, dogs were vaccinated and then
infected with biliary parasites. These vaccinated dogs showed a
significant reduction in clinical signs, plasma SPA levels and number of
parasites within the red blood cells and all recovered without
treatment. The control dogs that
were not vaccinated, had to however be treated to
prevent death.
Nobivac Piro
is a vaccine with an action entirely different to most commonly used
vaccines (eg.Parvo and Distemper type
vaccines). It should therefore be
clearly understood that dogs vaccinated with Nobivac®
Piro might possibly still become infected with Babesia parasites and even show signs of biliary, but prior vaccination according to the
recommended schedule, will allow time to treat; complicated cases may be
prevented; the biliary signs will be less severe;
and deaths may be prevented.
Tick control remains essential
in vaccinated dogs, as the yellow dog tick spends approximately 94 to 97% of
their life off-host, within the environment. Therefore only approximately 5% of the
yellow dog tick population occur on dogs.
An integrated control strategy is needed to beat biliary! An integrated control strategy would
involve the following:
§
Vaccination with Nobivac® Piro from
6 months of age. To complete the
basic vaccination protocol, a booster vaccination is required 3 to 6 weeks
after the initial vaccination. Thereafter revaccination is required every 6
months.
§
Habitat control –
seal off cracks and crevices in kennels; keep grass and weeds cut short;
use tick control products in kennels; with regular washing of bedding
§
Effective tick
control on the dog
Ask your veterinarian for more
information regarding the use of Nobivac®
Piro in beating biliary
in dogs!

TROY THE BOY
DACHSHUND HAS ARRIVED!
NEW LOCAL BOOK FOR YOU TO BUY
As part of an effort to raise funds for animals in need, Vanessa
Seddon, has written her first children’s
book, “Troy the Boy Dachshund”, to create awareness amongst young children
about the need to respect and care for animals. The book is self published
and is currently being promoted by two animal welfare organisations, CHARM –
Caring Hearts Animal Rescue Mission and Wolfhaven
to name a few. The book is also being distributed amongst selected vets and
pet shops.
This is the first in a series of short stories about a little black
dachshund, called Troy. His home in
suburbia South Africa
is the setting for most of his adventures. The short stories that follow
take the reader on a journey as little Troy
grows up and becomes a valuable member of the family.
The ongoing tale of Troy’s life and how he gains confidence in his abilities, the challenges he
faces and the many lessons he must learn, creates a bond between the young
reader and this lovable pet. The aim of these stories will be to encourage
a child to explore their understanding of themselves and their relationship
to others, and provide the chills with opportunities to solve a variety of
problems; the scenarios also promotes abstract
thinking and critical reasoning. This skills can
be applied to meaningful life activities and help express their feelings
about the social world.
Vanessa will be donating 15% of the proceeds of the book series
to her chosen charities in an effort to assist them in the good work that
they perform in the community.
Should you want to purchase the book you can place your order by
emailing the following email address:
Vanessa@mar-com.co.za
I am also looking for assistance in promoting the book, so if you
are willing to assist in on selling the book or providing a platform to
showcase the book, please contact me on the above
mentioned email address.

Eukanuba Dog Expert
Nutrition and the
Pregnant Bitch
Changing Nutritional Needs
Pregnancy and nursing are not only responsible for
many changes in a dog’s body, but for changes in
her lifestyle as well. Therefore special attention should be paid to her
changing nutritional needs throughout the entire reproduction process.
Before the Pregnancy:
Planning is Important
If you are planning to breed your female, it is important to assess her
body condition well in advance of breeding. Because of the physical demands
of pregnancy and nursing, starting off with less-than-ideal health can
cause problems.
An underweight bitch often has difficulty
consuming enough food to support her and her fetus’
nutritional needs. Overweight bitches may experience abnormal or difficult labor because of large fetuses.
Feeding a complete and balanced diet at amounts
that support a healthy weight and body condition before breeding helps the
bitch maintain her health and that of her offspring throughout pregnancy
and lactation.
Pregnancy
The gestation period for dogs is 9 weeks. Pregnant
bitches gain weight only slightly until about the sixth week and then gain
weight rapidly.
The energy requirements of pregnant bitches are
reflected in the pattern of weight gain. Pregnant bitches will need to
consume 25-50% more than normal maintenance energy amounts by the end of
pregnancy, but energy requirements do not increase until about the sixth
week.
Nursing
Pregnant bitches lose weight after giving birth.
However, their nutritional needs increase dramatically—energy
needs can be 2 to 3 times their normal adult maintenance requirement,
depending on litter size—in order to produce the
milk supply that will support the growth and nourishment of the offspring.
Adequate water intake is also important for sufficient milk volume.
To ensure the nursing bitch is receiving enough
nutrition, feed a nutrient-dense diet such as a performance diet or puppy
food. Without increasing the amount of food offered at a meal, increase the
number of meals throughout the day. Free-choice feed her, offering
unlimited access to dry food throughout the day.
Weaning
By five weeks after birth, most puppies are
showing an interest in their mother’s food.
Gradually, the puppies will begin eating more solid food and nursing less.
At the same time, the nursing bitch will usually reduce the amount of food
she is eating. Most puppies are completely weaned around 8 weeks after
birth. By this time, the mother’s energy
requirement is back at the maintenance level, and she should be eating her
normal pre-pregnancy diet.
Eukanuba Food
for the Pregnant Dog
The best diet for pregnant and nursing bitches is
a high-quality, nutrient-dense, commercial pet food that is formulated for
all life stages or for growth. Although puppy diets are generally
recommended for pregnant or nursing dogs, Eukanuba
large-breed puppy formulas are not
appropriate for this use due to their energy and mineral content.
Our recommended products are:-
Eukanuba High Activity (Performance) Eukanuba Puppy & Junior Small or Eukanuba
Puppy & Junior Medium Breed.

Subject: dachsies
Hi
Pat, I was wondering whether any of the SADC
members might have any books on dachsies,
preferably mini smooth but otherwise on all the sizes &
coats, which they may like to sell and for which I would also pay p&p. As a newcomer to the breed, I have
been disappointed to be able to get only one book (The contemporary
Dachshund by Eileen Falconer-Douglas) from Pets Publications, and Amazon doesn't seem to have any, even secondhand
ones. Any newsletters from any of the English Dachs clubs would be appreciated. I was
particularly trying to locate the book by Elizabeth Howell (Heesom?). There are plenty of books on
training etc., but I specifically wanted books giving backgrounds of the
great dogs, pedigrees, photos etc. Hope I may be
lucky! If you would like to put this is as an advert, please do
so, you can edit as you wish, and let me know cost. Betty Swift sunjon@telkomsa.net
