Wildlife & Business Strategy - "Dominating Territory and Protecting Market Share - Lessons from Lions."
Many a presentation has been delivered using wildlife as an analogy, but none has ever approached the subject from such an important and relevant angle as this! Dominating our territory in the same way as lions protecting our markets from international competition must be priority for all South African companies. Gerhard de Lange has been involved in conservation for the past eight years and is well known to visitors Pilanesberg National Park.
In 1992, Gerhard de Lange was involved in the relocation of 19 free ranging lions to Pilanesberg National Park. Fascinated with these animals, he made it his hobby to follow them and learn more about their behaviour. This he did, day and night for four years, and the lessons he learned during this time regarding the skills, tactics and techniques used by these lions to protect their territory proved invaluable in formulating a presentation from which business could learn from these animals. Gerhard de Lange has also written a book on his experiences. The most profound lesson he learned was that the sole objective of a pride of lions is to protect their territory at all costs - an objective that all local companies should be seriously considering bearing in mind not only the influx but the onslaught of international competition into our local markets. In this spellbinding analogy, Gerhard describes how the lions relocated into the Pilanesberg National Park split and carved their own territories and the lengths the pride males had to go to protect that territories. The continuous battle that pride males have to endure with younger, more agile male lions attempting to invade their territory is not only fascinating but holds valuable lessons that all business people can learn from.
