The Temple Veil
Exodus 26: 31-37
Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.
And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain
from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent.
Luke adds the following:
And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.
Remember the words of King Solomon when he dedicated the Temple:
1 Kings 8:12
Then spake Solomon,
The LORD said that he would dwell in the thick darkness.
In the midst of the suffering and pain,
The Heavenly Father was there,
The Heavenly Father was in the Darkness!
The Heavenly Father was in control!
Friend when your live is rent in two remember the
Lord is still in your midst for He promised:
Let your conversation be without covetousness;
and be content with such things as ye have:
for he hath said,
I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
But this day I want to speak on the Subject of:
The Temple Veil
Friend have you ever wondered what this Curtain
- the Temple Veil -
looked like that divided the Holy Place from the Holy of Holies!
That place where only the High Priest could enter?
The High Priest entered the Holy of Holies only once a year
to pray and ask for the sins of the Nation to be forgiven.
Some Bible Scholars tell us
- the Bible does not however mention this fact -
that a rope was attached to the foot of the High Priest
so that should the High Priest die while in the Holy of Holies
he could be pulled out!
But the Day Jesus was crucified the Veil was torn in two from top to bottom!
Notice not from bottom to top!
But Top to Bottom!
This was not the work of man because man would have torn it
from bottom to top!
It was the work of God
It was torn from Top to Bottom!
From Heaven to earth!
Christ's death meant that all could now enter the very presence of God
and seek and speak to God face to face!
Darkness came upon the earth
Friend in times of Darkness you can call out to God!
But Temple Veil - what did it look like?
Our Bible Reading tells us - Exodus 26: 31-37
The Temple Veil was a four coloured Curtain!
But why Four Colours?
Have you ever considered the reason?
We have Four Gospel accounts of the life of Jesus?
Have you ever wondered why?
Purple - Scarlet - White - Blue!
Matthew - Mark - Luke - John!
The Curtain points us to Jesus!
In the Old Testament the Curtain pointed to the Messiah!
Though the death of Jesus
The Curtain is rent and we have access to the Father
because of His death!
Four Colours - Four Gospels!
MATTHEW - PURPLE
Purple thoughout the ages was and still is the colour of Kings!
Purple reminds us of the authority of Kings!
Only Kings and rulers were allowed to wear Purple!
Matthew's Gospel is the Gospel of the King of Kings!
Only Matthew tells us that at the Birth of Jesus
Wise men came from the East seeking the King of the Jews?
The worshiped Him as the promised King and presented Him
presents fit for a King:
Gifts , gold and frankincense and myrrh!
We are reminded that at His crucifixion they also crowned Him
King of the Jews!
Friend this every day
Are you worshipping Him as your KING?
Have you brought Him gifts?
MARK - SCARLET
In Marks Gospel Jesus is revealed as the Suffering Servant!
The Servant of the Heavenly Father!
We are reminded the cost of following Jesus:
And when he had called the people unto him
with his disciples also, he said unto them,
Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself,
and take up his cross, and follow me.
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it;
but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake
and the gospelís, the same shall save it.
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world,
and lose his own soul?
Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
We are reminded that it costs something to follow Jesus?
Are you prepared to pay the price?
In the Old Testament - scarlet - reminded the people
who came to worship that sacrifice was needed to atone for their sins!
Scarlet reminds of price that Jesus paid!
He was the Sacrifice for the sins of the World!
LUKE - FINE LINEN - WHITE
In Luke Gospel we read of Jesus as the perfect Man!
Fine White Linen was the best clothing that the common man could wear.
It is not therefore surprising that it is only in Luke's Gospel
that we read of the parable of the lost son!
A young man who leaves his Father's house
and later finds himself in a field feed the pigs.
Luke 15: 15-18
And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country;
and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.
And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks
that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.
And when he came to himself, he said,
How many hired servants of my fatherís
have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!
I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him,
Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee.
When He returns home:
But the father said to his servants,
Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him;
and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:
Listen to what Paul writes:
2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature:
old things are passed away;
behold, all things are become new.
Listen to the Prophet Isaiah:
Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD:
though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow;
though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
Christ paid the price for your sins
Turn to Him
He will change that garment of sin
and exchange it for a robe of pure white
if only you will ask Him for forgiveness this very day!
JOHN - BLUE
The Gospel Writer John reminds us who Jesus
really is - He is the Son of God!
Blue reminds us of the Unclouded Heaven's - God's Abode!
While looking at the Temple Veil are attention is focused
on The Heavenly Father - the Almighty God!
The Jews were required to wear blue in their Talith - Prayer Mantle
to remind them:
I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.
Friend, may you also remember that
our God is able to help you in times of need!
John's Gospel tells us that God loves and cares for us:
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Heaven's Abode is Blue and Jesus told His disciples:
Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God,
believe also in me.
In my Fatherís house are many mansions: if it were not so,
I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
Friend, where will you spend Eternity?
The Temple Veil was made of Four different colour yarns:
Purple - the colour of Kings
Scarlet - the colour of Blood and sacrifice
White - the colour worn by the common man
Blue - the colour of God's Abode
all these colours pointed to the Messiah!
We have Four Gospels which tell us of Jesus:
In Matthew we have the King of Kings
In Mark we have the Suffering Servant
In Luke we have the perfect Man
In John we have the Son of the most high God!
And the Temple Veil was rent from top to bottom
From Heaven to earth!
When Jesus was crucified!
When Jesus died!
Though Jesus' death we now have direct access to Heaven's Throne!
Jesus told Thomas:
Jesus saith unto him,
I am the way, the truth, and the life:
no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Friend, only by following Jesus
and walking in His way
can you reach Heaven's shore!
Are you walking in His way?
