"Over the last few years I have come to know Pastor Cornelius
and have seen what a heart of compassion he has.
His course is well founded not only in the most current scientific research
but also in the motivation and heart of God;
compassionately seeking to extend a hand to one in need.
It would be difficult to take this class and remain unchanged.
I highly recommend it, especially to pastors and ministers of the Gospel
as an introduction to ministry to those living with HIV and AIDS."
Pastor Samuel Kader - Community Gospel Church - Ohio - USA

"Through, beautifully written information with great understanding
of the HIV-Aids disease, it's increasing prevalence documented
and saving Biblical passages to educate and assist the concerned Public."

As an Introduction to our HIV-Aids Christian Counselling Course,
please read from the Word of God:

Mark 5:21-34
And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side,
much people gathered unto him: and he was nigh unto the sea.
And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue,
Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet,
And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death:
I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live.
And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him.
And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years,
And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had,
and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,
When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment.
For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.
And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up;
and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.
And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him,
turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?
And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee,
and sayest thou, Who touched me?
And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing.
But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her,
came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.
And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole;
go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.

This woman had suffered much under many Doctors.
She had spend all that she had, looking for a cure for her sickness.
But was nothing better - she grew worse!
The fact that she had an issue of blood meant that she was unclean!
Anyone that touched her also became unclean!
Everyone avoided her for fear of also been declared unclean!
She was forbidden to enter the Temple or the Synagogue.
She alone in her sickness - no one could help her!

A Picture of those who have fallen victim to the HIV-Aids virus!
The Stigma of HIV-Aids means that the sufferer is shunned
by Society, friends family and often even the Church!
Money all spent on Doctors, seeking in vain for a cure!
Day by day their condition grows worst!

But there is hope as the woman in our Bible Reading discovered!
She had heard of Jesus!
The sole purpose of this Counselling Course is to make sure that
all those who suffer from HIV-Aids hear of Jesus!

This is the message that we must proclaim:
Romans 8:38-39
For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities,
nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature,
shall be able to separate us from the love of God,
which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Nothing, can separate us from the love of God!
Do you remember how much God loves us?

John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

A Christian HIV-Aids Counselor's first duty should be to make sure that
the "Sufferer" is introduced to Jesus as Saviour and Lord!
The person with HIV-Aids must realize and be told that regardless
of their condition or how they contracted the virus
that God loves them and has not forsaken them.

The HIV-AIDS statistics in Africa are horrific.
The HIV-AIDS virus in Africa is not limited to any one section of the population
- it knows and respects no boundaries.

Aids is already the grim reaper on the Goldfields, more then half of all deaths
recorded monthly at the Goldfields Regional Hospital can be linked to the HIV-AIDS virus.

There is a stigma attached to all those afflicted with the virus.
Those suffering from the virus are shunned by the rest of Society.
Children are abandoned and those dying from the virus
are facing death alone and afraid.

Goldfields Regional Hospital reports that 70% of patients treated daily
at this Hospital in Welkom are HIV positive!
90% of Children admitted to the Hospital for treatment are HIV positive.
(Forum Wednesday 6 November 2002)

Department of Health issued a Statement stating that HIV-Aids
is the leading cause of death presently in the Free State.
For the period January to July 2001, in the Free State 21 311 people were tested
for HIV-Aids. 6852 (32,2%) proved to be positive.
In Welkom 4386 tests were done of which 36% proved positive.
(Volksblad - Monday, October 1, 2001)

Shock Statistics were released recently concerning the Drivers of the Heavy duty,
long distance Transport Trucks in South Africa.
The Industry has some 54 000 Drivers in South Africa and it is estimated
that up to 65% of the Drivers could be HIV positive already.
(Vista - July 26, 2001)

At the Johannesburg Hospital 80% of the patients admitted to the Medical ward are HIV positive.
40% of the more than 1200 beds at the Hospital are occupied by people with HIV-related illnesses.
(Sunday Times Metro - May 20, 2001)

Almost 12-million South Africans are under the age of 15.
At the current rate of HIV-infection, more than half this age group (over 6-million people!)
could die of AID-related causes in the next five to 10 years.
(S'camtoPRINT April 8 2001 Issue 10)

The Grim Reaper - We are a dying society. Statistics SA recorded 218 279 deaths in 1994.
Last year, the figure had risen to more than 700 000 - and the death rate is predicted
to keep rising at a horrifying 20% a year mainly as a result of HIV-Aids.
Unisa's Bureau for Market Research says that South Africa's population will be
not 80 million as projected by the year 2020 but merely 50 million.
(Sunday Times - Business Times January 28, 2001)

Plans for the building of new schools in the Free State are to be shelved.
More the 100 000 less children than in 1998 will begin their school career
over the next 5 years, shock birth figures of children born with HIV-Aids
in the Free State have revealed. Statistics released have shown that
70 000 babies a year are born at present with HIV-Aids in South Africa.
While most live only for a year or less,
more the 50% die between the ages of 7 and 8 years.

(Die Volksblad - January 22, 2001)

Grave robbers have stolen the bones of a former National Party high-flyer,
apparently for use in the making of a bizarre muti to cure Aids.
Rall's former farm manager, Fanie Pretorius, 75,
said this week sangomas (Traditional Healers - Witch Doctors)
in the area had put the word out that Aids sufferers
who brewed the crushed bones of well known whites into tea would be cured.

A quarter of the members of the South African Police Force are already
infected with the HIV virus according to SACMA.
(South African Civil and Military Alliance)
ie: 30 000 police officers out of the total 120 000 members of the police force.
This shocking news comes on the heels of the announcement by Dr Thomas Muhr
an Aids researcher with Metropolitan Life that half
the members of the South African Defense Force are HIV positive.
It would appear that the South African Defense Force
has the highest incidence of HIV of any Defense force in the world.
(Volksblad, Thursday, April 27, 2000)

Flat on the floor in her small council house, Mrs Pumla Joy of Stiltepark in Meloding,
a township on the Goldfields, an Aids victim has laid for the past 4 weeks waiting for death.
In accordance with Government policy she was discharged from the local hospital
when it was established that she would no-longer benefit from medical treatment.
Her son, Amen, died of Aids in January and now she is facing death all alone without the support
of family and friends as they firmly believe that she is "bewitched".
(Forum, Wednesday, April 26, 2000)

The Aids epidemic in South Africa will reach its peak during 2001 according to
Ms Henine Jordaan a lecturer at the Vista University in her Doctorate Thesis entitled:
"The Economic impact of Aids on the Mining Industry".
Furthermore she states that her research has revealed that 45% of Miner workers
are already infected with the HIV-Aids virus and that production levels on the mines
have already fallen by 20% as a result.
She also claims that most of those infected with HIV-Aids are in the age group 15 to 49
but the majority that are at present dying from the virus are younger then 30 years.
(Goldfields Forum, Wednesday April 12, 2000)

It is estimated that 300 000 South Africans will die of Aids in 2001.
In 2005 the figure will rise to 700 000
and 2010 some 850 000 will die yearly from the epidemic.
(Sake-February 24, 2000)

where another 22 million are estimated to carry the disease - two-thirds of all the world's cases.
(Sunday Times-December 5, 1999)

South Africa is considered the country where HIV epidemic is the fastest growing in the world,
with close to 50 000 people infected every month.
The worst affected are those in the 15 to 40 year age bracket.
Statistics indicate that 45% of the country's mine workers are HIV positive,
a situation further compounded by a high prevalence of tuberculosis among the miners.
(Forum-December 1, 1999)

A lady from the Kutwlanong Township on the Goldfields was found

(Volksblad - Sake, July 29, 1999)

AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome)
also known as Vigs (in Afrikaans) in South Africa
is a disease caused by a virus called
HIV (Human Immune Deficiency Virus)
which breaks down the body's defenses
against other infections.
This means that a person with HIV-Aids can get sick or die
from illnesses that would not normally affect him or her.
The HIV virus is carried in body fluids, especially blood, semen and vaginal fluids.

People tend to think that HIV-Aids happens to "other people" and that they are not at risk.
More then 60% of all the people infected with HIV-Aids are living in Africa.
Six times more women than men between the age of 15 and 23 are infected with the virus.
HIV respects no boundaries in terms of age, race, gender, sexual orientation or social status.
Anyone can get HIV-Aids it does not matter who you are, it is what you do that counts.
The virus can be transmitted from male to male, female to male or male to female!

The Aids Syndrome was first reported in 1981 in the USA.
A small number of men with depressed immune systems were diagnosed with
Pneumocystis Carinii Pneumonia and Karposis Sarcoma.
It took however until 1983 to identify the virus, a retrovirus,
which attacks and destroys the immune system
by entering and "taking over" certain cells in the body.
The body becomes defenseless against opportunistic infections which then invade the body.
Death from Aids is generally not due to HIV infection itself,
but due to opportunistic infections
For example:
Tuberculosis (TB)
Certain types of Cancers.

In February 1999 Scientists from Britain, France and the USA
announced that the source of the HIV virus is
a Subspecies of the endangered Chimpanzee
- Pan troglodytes troglodytes -
that is native to West Central Africa.
Tribes in that part of the world hunt the Chimpanzee for food.
Though eating the Chimpanzee the virus in their blood was passed on to Humans!

The Chimpanzees carrying the virus has however developed
an immunity to the virus and many believe
that the Chimpanzee therefore holds the key
to developing a vaccine to combat the disease.

Aids is the end stage of the HIV disease.
HIV is transmitted:
By having unprotected sex with someone who is infected with the HIV virus.
(Anal sex is especially risky)
Through contact with contaminated Blood, Body Tissue, or needles.
(Sharing needles and syringes to inject drugs is especially dangerous)
Transferred from Mother to Child during pregnancy or at birth or by breast feeding.

Being HIV infected does not necessary imply that a person has Aids.
A person can remain HIV positive for a long period - normally 6-10 years -
but even longer without developing full blown Aids!
They can remain asymptomatic and healthy for many years
passing on the virus to others unknowingly and unwittingly.
Some however may deteriorate health wise rapidly.

There is a brief period (normally 4-8 weeks) after exposure to HIV
where an individual will remain negative when tested for the virus.
This is because the immune response has not had enough time to make antibodies against HIV.
But even during this period the HIV virus can be transmitted to another person!

Early signs of immune system deteriorating include - weight loss, fevers,
night sweats, skin rashes, oral thrust, shingles, anorexia, swollen glands,
enlarged spleen, neurological changes, headaches, genital lesions,
oral hairy leucoplakia, (thick white patches on the tongue) fatigue and lethargy.

HIV-Aids can be avoided if:
One practices safe sex, in other words:
- stick to one sexual partner and use a condom to stop the exchange of body fluids.
(important if you do not know if the other person is infected with the HIV virus)
Safer sex is having sex with someone who does not have other sexual partners.
Does not share needles and syringes with others to inject drugs!

Many Preachers and Churches claim that the HIV-AIDS virus
is the plague and wrath of God's judgment on the world.
This may be so, but listen, we have a message from the Book of Revelation.
The four Horses mentioned in the Sixth Chapter of Revelation
may be galloping across our Continent wreaking destruction.
The White Horse with it bow going forth to conquer the World.
The Red Horse ushering in War and killing with a great sword.
The Black horse with its Balances announcing famine.
The Pale Horse of Death and Destruction.
Fear inspiring!
But listen to the Command that is given while the Black Horse
is galloping across the World:

Revelation 6:6
....and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.

The reason for this command may be found in
the story of the Good Samaritan.
Luke 10:34
And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine,
and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

Our message is simple:
God has not turned HIS back on those afflicted and suffering
with the HIV-AIDS virus nor has this ministry.

Listen to the Word:
Isaiah 49:16
I will not forget you....I have carved you on the palm of my hand.

Jesus is our Good Samaritan and He has promised that
there will always be enough "oil and wine" to bind up your wounds.

Listen to what Anthony Perkins an actor said
shortly before his death:

"There are many who believe that this disease is God's Vengeance,
but I believe it was sent to teach people how to love and understand
and have compassion for each other.
I have learnt more about love, selflessness and human understanding
from people I have met in this great adventure in the world of Aids
than I ever did in the cut-throat, competitive world in which I spent my life."

At the outset of this section of our Course
I would like to share with you the following story
that was sent to me by e-mail, the Source of which is unknown.

Walking through the forest, a seasoned hiker came upon a broad, slowly moving river.
He stopped to gaze over the waters, appreciating the beauty,
when suddenly he heard a faint cry coming from upstream.
Looking in the direction of the noise, he saw an obviously dowing man
floundering in the river and drifting slowly towards him.
The hiker was stunned momentarily, but he sprang into action
when he saw the man disappear beneath the waters.
Throwing off all of his cumbersome gear,
he dove into the river and swam like a madman
towards the spot where the man went under.
Upon reaching the spot he plunged below the surface
and frantically hauled up the helpless man.
Then he labouriously towed the victim to shore.
Heaving the lifeless body up on the riverbank,
the hiker attempted to revive the man,
who eventually spate up the water and began to breathe.
Relieved, the hiker paused to catch his breath.
But no sooner had he done so than he heard another voice out on the water.
Another downing person!
Once again he swam out and pulled the person to shore,
a little more slowly this time.
As the hiker - turned - lifeguard revived the second victim,
he heard yet another cry for help!
All day long the hiker worked, rescuing one person after another
as they came drifting down the river.
There seemed to be no end of drowning victims,
and the hiker didn't think he could keep it up.
Just when he was about to collapse from exhaustion,
he spotted another man walking rapidly besides the river, headed upstream.
"Hey mister!" he cried out
"Please help me! These poor people are downing!"
Amazingly, the man kept walking upstream.
The astonished hiker called out again.
Without even acknowledging the cry, the man kept going.
Indignant and angry, the hiker leapt to his feet,
ran towards the uncompassionate man and stood directly in his path,
and with a loud voice demanded,
"Sir! How can you possibly walk past all these downing people?
Have you no compassion or conscience?
Must I force you to help me save these people?"
The stranger stopped, looked at him for the first time
and said with a calm, focused voice,
"Sir, please get out of my way, I am headed upstream
to stop the guy who is pushing all these people in the river!"
Each of us has a role to play in rescuing those who are drowning in sin.
Some of us pull people from the water and resuscitate them
with counselling, food and shelter, a rehabilitation program,
a support group, or financial aid.
Affirm those doing these important ministries.
Others of us find our place of ministry upstream,
opposing the One pushing people into the river.
We do this by introducing those people to Jesus Christ.
Knowing Christ sets a person free from sin
and releases them from satan's power over them.
By itself, pulling people from the water isn't enough!
We need to help people deal with the problem of sin at its source.

Having said that lets now continue with
Before one can be an HIV-Aids Christian Counsellor
there is one important question that will be needed to be answered truthfully.
The Question:
For the Individual:
Why do you want to be an HIV-Aids' Counsellor?
For the Church:
Why does your Church want a HIV-Aids Ministry?

You will have to examine your motives very carefully!
South Africa has the most stringent confidentially laws in the world.
These laws are in place to protect the sufferer from discrimination
and the stigma that is attached to the virus.
If the Counsellor should reveal someone's HIV-Aids status
even unintentionally to another person,
the Counsellor could be prosecuted.

Are you trustworthy?
No one will even approach you for counselling if they know
that you will reveal their identity.
A HIV-Aids ministry is in many respects a silent outreach.
The most successful HIV-Aids' Counselling Ministries
are those that work without a huge fanfare.

Once you have answered this Question,
the second question that needs to be answered is:
Do I have the necessary Qualifications to be a
HIV-Aids Christian Counsellor?

There are many Courses available to train
one to counsel and or to help
those suffering from the HIV-Aids virus.
This Course and other Courses available may equip you
with the necessary knowledge and training to counsel those in need.
Knowledge and Training are important
the three qualifications that are absolutely essential for the
those wanting to counsel and help those suffering from the HIV-Aids virus are:
A Personal Relationship with Jesus.
Are you walking with Jesus along Life's Highway?
A Good Listener.
Someone that will just listen!
Who will not criticize, condemn or judge!
Will listen and accept the person as a Child of God unconditionally.!
A love for those suffering from the virus!
Unconditional love!
Sometimes all that HIV-Aids sufferer needs is to know
that someone cares.
The knowledge that they are accepted as a person and are not rejected or shunned.
Do you care enough just to put your arms around that person and hug them?
Without fear and with lots of compassion!

Mother Theresa of Calcutta once said:
"If we judge people we have no time to love them!"

An Aids Ministry need not be limited to just
Christian Counselling.

A Counselling Ministry takes patience to start and
a trust needs to be built up in the Community.
My Personal Ministry was started via the Internet,
with my Web-page and Hospital visitation.
It took time and patience before I received prayer requests
and personal requests for help.
A relationship of Trust needed to be built first!

A Home Care based Ministry could be started for the
Terminally ill persons in the Community.
Teams could be willing to care for the sick:
So that Family Members can:
Have a good night's rest.
Go shopping
or even take a short weekend break!
Help families to relieved of some of the stress and stain of caring
for someone who is Terminally ill!

Teams could also be started to help families to ensure that those
who are Terminally ill receive the basic Diet and Food requirements.
To help families with the basic Hygiene care for the Terminally ill!

Notice, I used the words Terminally ill.
By helping the Terminally ill the stigma of "HIV-Aids"
is removed and soon you will be trusted enough
and people will reveal if they have the HIV-Aids virus.
Once this happens doors of Ministry will be opened!
Remember the story of The River and find your place of Ministry!

South Africa is facing a huge problem as HIV-Aids virus takes its cruel toll.
The number of person afflicted with this virus is growing at an alarming rate.
Can you as a single Counsellor make a difference?

The Story was told about two men walking down a Mexican beach,
talking with one another.
They could see a man in the distance throwing something into the ocean.
As they got closer, they saw that he was bending over,
picking something up and throwing it into the ocean.

There were starfish on the beach which were left by the outgoing tide.
The man was throwing them out where they could swim away.
One of the two men asked, "What are you doing?"
The man replied, "I am throwing the starfish back out to sea.
If they don't get back into the deeper water, they will die."
The other man replied, "I understand that part, but look at this beach.
It is covered with starfish. There must be thousands stranded out here.
How do you feel that this will make a difference?"
The man bent over, picked up another starfish, hurled him out to sea,
and with a smile on his face said,
"Made a difference to that one!"

There are thousands who need the Lord and need the love of Christians.
Each one of us can "make a difference" to someone.
By ministering to those suffering from HIV-Aids

Most sufferers just need a "Friend" to be with them when they face death
and for this reason we need to introduce them to a "Very Special Friend"
and His name is Jesus.
With Jesus at their side they will have no fear
as they walk through the valley of the shadow of death.

How do we measure success?
Luke 15:7
I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repented,
more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.

Success is achieved when we make a difference to just one person!

It is essential and of paramount importance that
we introduce Jesus to the person we are counselling.

Because Jesus said:
John 14:6
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life:
no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Outside of Jesus there is no salvation!
Outside of Jesus there is no hope!
Jesus is the only answer!

Mark 8:36
For what shall it profit a man,
if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

But what if the Virus was contacted as a result of a sinful relationship?
Do you want to help or to condemn the person?

We need to remember the definition of a Christian:
A Christian is a person who has had a difficult past
but Praise God now has a glorious future!

Listen to the Word of God:
Romans 3:23
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.

Romans 5:8
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that,
while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 2: 11
For there is no respect of persons with God.

John 8: 7
So when they continued asking Him,
He lifted Himself up, and said unto them,
He that is without sin among you,
let him first cast a son at her.

We need to remind the person how important to and how much God loves him or her.

John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

But you may say:
Sin is sin!
And the Bible says:
Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death;
but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

What if the person asks:
Could this not be a punishment for my past sinful life?

An intelligent and gifted young man, just three weeks before his death,
turned to Joan Marston of the Bloemfontein Hospice one day and said:
"I have paid for my sins, what more do people want of me?"

This young man experienced feelings of guilty, and the very real fear that God was punishing him.
Living on a small disability pension meant that he had lost his financial independence,
in fact his disease had taken away his ability to earn a living,
and with the loss of his job had come the loss of his lifestyle,
his friends, his car, his pet and eventually his own home.

A person with Aids has to deal with multiple losses - and often losses his self respect as well.
On top of all of this, the community treats him as an outcast.
The person with Aids may decide that life is no longer worth living,
and suicide becomes an attractive option.

And this is the reason why the role of the Christian Counsellor is so important and vital.
We need to remind the person that God loves them and that he or she is important to Him.

2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness,
but is long-suffering toward us, not willing that any should perish,
but that all should come to repentance.

Your Value in God's Eyes
A well known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $20 bill.
In the room of 200, he asked, "Who would like this $20 bill?"
Hands started going up. He said,
"I am going to give this $20 to one of you but first, let me do this."

He proceeded to crumple the dollar bill up.
He then asked, "Who still wants it?"
Still the hands were up in the air.
"Well," he replied, "What if I do this?"
He dropped it on the floor, and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe.
He picked up the $20 bill, now all crumpled and dirty.
"Now who still wants it?"
Still the hands went into the air.

"My friends, you have all learned a very valuable lesson.
No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it
because it did not decrease in value...
It is still worth $20.

Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt
by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way.
We feel as though we are worthless.
But no matter what has happened or what will happen,
you will never lose your value in God's eyes.
To God, dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you are still priceless to Him.

Always remember:
Psalm 34:18 (NASB)
"The Lord is near to the brokenhearted,
And saves those who are crushed in spirit."

Christ died for our sins!
And we have the promise:
1 John 1:8-9
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins,
and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

No matter what our sin, if we turn to Christ
He will forgive us!
Furthermore we have another promise:

2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature:
old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

The Touch of The Master's Hand
‘Twas battered and scarred, and the auctioneer
Thought it was scarcely worth his while
To waste much time on the old violin,
But he held it up with a smile.
"What am I bidden, good folk?" he cried,
"Who'll start the bidding for me?
"A dollar - a dollar - then two, only two -
"Two dollars, and who'll make it three?
"Going for three" but no -
From the room far back, a gray-haired man
Came forward and picked up the bow,
Then wiping the dust from the old violin,
And tightening the loosened strings,
He played a melody pure and sweet
As a caroling angel sings.
The music ceased, and the auctioneer,
With a voice that was quiet and low,
Said "NOW what am I bid for the old violin?"
And he held it up with the bow.
"A thousand dollars - and who'll make it two?
"Two thousand - and who'll make it three?
"Three thousand once - three thousand twice -
"And going - and gone," cried he.
The people cheered, but some cried,
"We do not understand what changed its worth?"
- Quick came the reply,
"The Touch of the Master's Hand."
And many a man with his life out of tune,
And battered and scarred with sin,
Is auctioned off cheap, to a thoughtless crowd,
Much like the old violin.
A "mess of pottage - a glass of wine,
A game" - and he travels on:
He is going once - and going twice -
He's going - and almost gone!
But the Master comes, and the foolish crowd
Can never quite understand
The worth of a soul, and the change that's wrought
By the Touch of the Master's Hand

The person with HIV-Aids needs to know:
Friend, no matter how battered and scarred your life may be
from the HIV-Aids virus God can change your life into
something useful for HIS glory!
You are important to God!

It is important that we speak of Baptism.
Baptism by immersion can play an important role
in helping someone to put his sinful past behind him
and in helping someone to overcome his guilt.

Baptism symbolizes a burial:
Romans 6:4
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death:
that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father,
even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Baptism however  must symbolize a person's faith
in Jesus and a decision to leave the past behind and to follow Christ.
Baptism symbolizes the burial of our past sins!
It symbolizes the forgiveness of our sins through Christ!
Listen what Peter said on the day of Pentecost:
Acts 2:38-39
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you
in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins,
and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
For the promise is unto you, and to your children,
and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

But listen also to what Jesus said:
Matthew 28:19-20
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them
in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you:
and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.

Notice the words:
Lo, I am with you always!

And this is the promise that we must stress:
Hebrews 13:5
....... for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

Psalm 23:4
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Everything in life has a purpose
difficult as it may be to accept:
Romans 8:28
And we know that all things work together for good to them
that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

What is the duty and role of a Christian Counsellor?
It is point others to Christ
and to remind them of HIS love and presence!

Please allow me to share a story with you
before we examine the important subject of Home Care.

-author unknown-

A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-year old grandson.
The old man's hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered.
The family ate together at the table, but the elderly grandfather's shaky hands
and failing sight made eating difficult.
Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor.
When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth.

The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess.
"We must do something about Grandfather," said the son.
"I've had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor."
Therefore, the husband and wife set a small table in the corner.
There, Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner.
Since grandfather had broken a dish two, his food was served in a wooden bowl.
When the family glanced in Grandfather's direction,
sometimes he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone.
Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions
when he dropped a fork or spilled food.

The four-year-old watched it all in silence.
One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor.
He asked the child sweetly, "What are you making?"
Just as sweetly, the boy responded,
"Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat your food in when I grow up."
The four-year-old smiled and went back to work.
The words so struck the parents that they were speechless.
Then tears started to stream down their cheeks.
Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done.

That evening the husband took Grandfather's hand and gently led him back to the family table.
For the remainder of his days, he ate every meal with the family.
And for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer
when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled.

Always remember:
"What goes around, comes around!"
However, "Treating others as you would treat yourself
or that you would like to be treated will grant you more love than not!

Matthew 25:40
And the King shall answer and say unto them,
Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one
of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

At the outset it must be stated that no cases have been reported of HIV transmission
by casual contact with or even kissing an infected individual have been identified as yet.
You will not get HIV-Aids:
Through touching, shaking hands, hugging or sitting next to an infected person.
Though exposure to coughing or sneezing.
Though sharing cups, plates, cutlery, glasses, telephones, sinks, baths,
swimming pools, towels or toilets.
Through a Blood transfusion (since blood donations are screened in South Africa)

The HIV virus is a very weak virus in that it cannot live outside a host for very long.
It is usually dead within one half hour if it is not sitting in moist body fluids, such as blood.
So a glass from a family member infected with HIV would not be a source of infection
if it had been sitting out and was dried.
Usually because family members do not share body fluids
they are perfectly safe from infection with an HIV infected loved one in the home.

But having said this, practices that increase the likelihood of blood contact,
such as sharing toothbrushes or razors should be avoided.

Some practical way in helping the person with HIV-Aids.
It is very important to know that Good Body Hygiene can help reduce the incidence of infections.
Thus it is important that as much assistance as possible be given to ensuring
that the person is able to maintain good body hygiene and a clean environment.
Ensuring that the person:
Has sufficient soap, toothpaste and other personal hygiene requirements.
Is able to bath and or wash regularly, and be assisted if necessary.

Helping the person to avoid persons who have infections, the flu or a cold.
Regular hand-washing is the most important manner of infection control.
Hand Cream can prevent broken skin.
Any cut or damaged skin must be covered with a plaster.
This is important for both the person with HIV-Aids and those helping or giving care.

Bed linen and clothes of the person with HIV-Aids should be washed in
Hot water and dried in the sun before ironing!
Linen and clothes soiled with blood or body fluids should first be soaked with
a solution of Household bleach for example: Jik, Javel or Ace.
Any Blood spills can be cleaned up with the same solution.
Solution: 1 part Household Bleach to 9 parts water.
This solution can also be used to disinfect eating utensils and cleaning the Bath or Toilet.

The right diet containing a variety of foods will help the person with HIV-Aids to fight the disease.
HIV-Aids effects the immune system and also causes weight loss, diarrhoea, malabsorption and vomiting.
Good nutrition is there essential to keep the body as healthy as possible.

Why is good nutrition important?
To promote weight gain.
To prevent weight loss.
To prevent disease and infection by improving nutritional status.
To prevent food poisoning leading to weight loss.

The Food that we eat can be divided into three groups:
Energy Foods
These include:
Breads, Margarine, Mealies, Rice, Oil, Mealiemeal, Mabella Porridge, Samp and Mealie Rice.
Helps to maintain and prevent Weight Loss.
These foods give us energy for the day.

Body Building Foods
These include:
Meat, Poultry, Fish, Milk, Eggs, Cheeses, Peanut Butter, Legumes (Beans etc)
Help to build our muscles, bones, teeth and blood.
Helps to keep one strong!

Protective Foods
These include all the Fruits and Vegetables.
For example: Spinach, Pumpkin, Carrots, Cabbage, Apples and Bananas.
Food in this group help to protect you from illness.

By helping the person with HIV-Aids to maintain a healthy diet
we can improve their quality of life!
If the person is unable to eat enough food per meal,
help them to eat smaller meals more regularly.
Make sure that they eat foods from all three groups.
Adding oil, sugar or peanut butter to the diet gives them
that extra energy they need and helps prevent weight loss.

We can make a different just by ensuring that the
HIV-Aids person knows the importance of good nutrition!
By providing it!
The Church can play an important role in this regard!

Mental changes such as:
Difficulty in thinking clearly.
Behaviour irrational, disinterested, or unpredictable.
Strength or co-ordination deteriorates.

The causes could be from:
An infection of the Body.
HIV infection of the Brain.
Severe Depression.

All Treatment should be based on preventing harm to the person.
Treat the Infections if possible.
Treat the Depression.
Prevent accidents.
Help the person to cope and function as normal as possible.
Avoid stress by creating a quiet environment if possible.

Never ever under-estimate the power of Prayer.
Always remember that Prayer moves the Hand of the One with Whom
all things are possible!
The Bible reminds us:
Luke 1:37
For with God nothing shall be impossible!

Allow me to share with you,
a True Testimony told to me by a fellow Pastor,
Rev Samuel Kader of Ohio, USA.
"My friend Paul had AIDS.
He was such a blessing to our church.
He loved the Lord and would play his piano to worship God
with such skill you were brought right to the feet of the Master in worship.
Paul was hospitalized and the lesions had attacked his brain.
His doctors said he had no more than 2 weeks left to live.
I went to visit Paul in the hospital and he had no short term memory.
He would start to answer a question, then stop in mid-sentence
because he forgot what he was talking about.
He knew who I was but would not be able to carry on a conversation.
Likewise, when his tray would come he would not remember it was there
and unless prompted would not eat
because he could not remember what he was doing.
In the hospital the shower was down the hall.
Paul could not shower because if he started down the hall with a towel and soap,
he'd get lost forgetting where he was going or where he was supposed to be.
On my first visit I prayed with him, but while I was praying,
I had a dream like image in my mind with my eyes closed.
It was like seeing demons with long talons
Sticking their fingers into Paul's brain and stirring it around to keep him confused.
I began taking authority over these demons and told them to get their hands off
Brother Paul in the Name of Jesus!
I remembered the Word had said the battle was not against people
but demonic forces at work.

Ephesians 6:12-13 (NIV)
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers,
against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world
and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes,
you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

2 Corinthians 10: 3-4 (NIV)
For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.
The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world.
On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.

This was spiritual warfare.
I came the next day to see Paul and he did not seem as confused.
We could hold some small conversations.
We prayed again.
Not much else changed that week, but I came every day and prayed for Paul.
The last day of that week I went to visit him and his room was empty.
I panicked, because I thought-maybe he died!
I went to the nurses' desk to ask where Paul had gone.
They looked at me like I was silly to ask such a question
and answered matter of factly that he was down the hall taking a shower.
He wasn't able to do that!
I waited for him to return and Paul felt and looked great.
We had a lovely visit and in a day after that the doctors sent Paul home.
His faculties were completely restored.
He was so grateful that when I went to visit Paul at home
he was playing the piano, worshipping the Lord.
Paul spent the rest of his life worshipping GOD at the piano on a daily basis.
He lived another 2 years and they were productive years for him.
He witnessed to many people and amazed everyone.
Never take for granted the power of prayer or the presence of GOD
or the power in the Name of Jesus."

The Church has a duty not only to reach out and minister
to those who are afflicted and suffering with the HIV-AIDS virus,
we also have a duty and a calling, to sound out the trumpet to the youth
about the dangers lurking in modern day lifestyles and to tell them
how to avoid becoming afflicted with the HIV-AIDS virus !

The answer - the only way to stop the HIV-AIDS virus from spreading further
and destroying more lives is found in the following story sent to me by a friend:

I WAS HOLDING A NOTICE FROM my 13-year-old son's school
announcing a meeting to preview the new course in sexuality.
Parents could examine the curriculum and take part in an actual lesson
presented exactly as it would be given to the students.
When I arrived at the school, I was surprised to discover only about a dozen parents there.
As we waited for the presentation, I thumbed through
page after page of instructions in the prevention of pregnancy or disease.
I found abstinence mentioned only once in passing.
When the teacher arrived with the school nurse, she asked if there were any questions.
I asked why abstinence did not play a noticeable part in the material.
What happened next was shocking.
There was a great deal of laughter, and someone suggested that
if I thought abstinence had any merit, I should go back to burying my head in the sand.
The teacher and the nurse said nothing as I drowned in a sea of embarrassment.
My mind had gone blank, and I could think of nothing to say.
The teacher explained to me that the job of the school was to teach "facts,"
and the home was responsible for moral training.
I sat in silence for the next 20 minutes as the course was explained.
The other parents seemed to give their unqualified support to the materials.
"Donuts, at the back," announced the teacher during the break.
"I'd like you to put on the name tags we have prepared
-they're right by the donuts and mingle with the other parents.
" Everyone moved to the back of the room.
As I watched them affixing their name tags and shaking hands,
I sat deep in thought. I was ashamed that I had not been able to convince them
to include a serious discussion of abstinence in the materials.
I uttered a silent prayer for guidance.
My thoughts were interrupted by the teacher's hand on my shoulder.
"Won't you join the others, Mr Layton?"
The nurse smiled sweetly at me. "The donuts are good."
"Thank you, no," I replied. "Well, then, how about a name tag?
I'm sure the others would like to meet you."
"Somehow I doubt that," I replied.
"Won't you please join them?" she coaxed.
Then I heard a still, small voice whisper, "Don't go."
The instruction was unmistakable. "I'll just wait here," I said.
When the class was called back to order, the teacher looked around the long table
and thanked everyone for putting on name tags.
She ignored me.
Then she said, "Now we're going to give you the same lesson we'll be giving your children.
Everyone please peel off your name tags."
I watched in silence as the tags came off.
"Now, then, on the back of one of the tags, I drew a tiny flower.
Who has it, please?"
The gentleman across from me held it up.
"Here it is!" "All right," she said.
"The flower represents disease.
Do you recall with whom you shook hands?"
He pointed to a couple of people.
"Very good," she replied.
"The handshake in this case represents intimacy.
So the two people you had contact with now have the disease."
There was laughter and joking among the parents.
The teacher continued, "And whom did the two of You shake hands with?"
The point was well taken, and she explained how this lesson would show students
how quickly disease is spread.
"Since we all shook hands, we all have the disease."
It was then that I heard the still, small voice again.
"Speak now, it said, "but be humble."
I noted wryly the latter admonition, then rose from my chair.
I apologized for any upset I might have caused earlier,
congratulated the teacher on an excellent lesson that would impress the youth,
and concluded by saying I had only one small point I wished to make.
"Not all of us were infected,"
I said. "One of us ... abstained."

How to banish the HIV-Aids virus from our land?
For our Young people:
Abstinence is the only safe way of avoiding the HIV-Aids Virus!
Condoms offer a sense of false security
and do not guarantee that you will not contract the virus!
They do not provide 100% protection from the virus.
We need to excise caution when promoting the use of "Condoms for sex"
that we do not stimulate those who are not sexually active to engage in sex!
We as the Church need to promote the message:
True Love Waits!

Are Condoms really safe?
Condoms are made of very thin latex rubber and are therefore very fragile.
Manufacturing defeats are frequent.
The Industry standard is not more than four leaky condoms per 1000.
In other words, it is acceptable if every 250th condom fails!
Are you prepared to take the risk?

"Of the 66 million condoms Britain supplied to Zimbabwe to fight Aids,
24 million were destroyed after laboratory tests
in Zimbabwe found them to be of "poor quality"
(Mail & Guardian 1995/11/17)

The SA Bureau of Standards said in its Annual Report to Parliament
during April 1989 that all 24 sets of Condoms it tested failed,
of these 17 failed "in respect of one or more of the physical requirements
of the specification, notably freedom from pinholes"

Three out of 18 men infected with Aids infected their partners
within 18 months, even though they were using condoms,
according to a University of Miami study presented
at the Third International Conference on Aids in June 1987.

For Adults:
The only safeguard against the virus is faithfulness in the Marriage Relationship.
Faithfulness to your partner.
Simply put:
Sex outside of a Marriage Relationship always carries a risk of exposure to the virus!
True love means that you will be faithful to your Partner!

There is no cure for HIV-Aids nor a vaccine as yet against the disease
it is a preventable disease!

The options are:
No sex!
Safer Sex!
or the risk of getting HIV-Aids!

How to banish the HIV-Aids virus from our Land?
A return to God's Law!
Ultimately, Aids will only be beaten by a return to God's Moral laws!

An Aeroplane is about to crash, there are 12 Passengers on the Flight,
BUT only 7 Parachutes!
Who should be saved?
The Five remaining Passengers will face certain death
when the Aeroplane crashes!

Examine the Passenger List:
1. An Alcoholic
2. A Homosexual
3. A Child Abuser
4. A Millionaire Philanthropist
5. A Drug Addict
6. A terminally ill Woman
7. A crippled 2 year old Child
8. A School Teacher
9. A Social Worker
10. An Abortionist Specialist
11. A Minister of Religion
12. The Pilot

Make your personal choice.
Then in Groups discuss and make a Group decision concerning
the fate of the Passengers.
Who will receive Parachutes and who not?
What are the reasons behind the decisions taken?

The following Passenger Details are released after the decisions
are taken as to who will receive the Parachutes!

1. The alcoholic is the flight engineer
2. The Homosexual is your Brother
3. The Child Abuser was convicted and served his sentence
- he was under the influence of alcohol at the time.
4. The Millionaire Philanthropist in addition to supporting many worthwhile charities
also funds Terrorist Organizations.
5. The Drug addict is a brilliant musician.
6. The terminally ill woman is your mother
7. The crippled child is the Teacher's son proceeding overseas for treatment.
8. The School Teacher is the child's mother
9. The Social Worker is a drug smuggler
10. The abortionist specialist is a committed anti-rape campaigner
11. The Minister of religion is a retired man in his 80s
12. The Pilot is a recently rehabilitated sex offender.

If you had know these details prior to making your decision would it have influenced
or changed your decision as to who would have received the available parachutes?

A Question:
What does it tell us if you needed to change
your list of who was to receive the Parachutes?

It tells us that we can sometimes be wrong about people
when we judge or make decisions concerning them!
What is important, is how God views that person!

We need always to remember:
1 Samuel 16:7
But the LORD said unto Samuel,
Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature;
because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth;
for man looketh on the outward appearance,
but the LORD looketh on the heart.
