Go Ye Rather

by Pastor Cornelius Claassen

Bible Reading: Matthew 25: 1-13

Text verse:
9. But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but
go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.

We are children of the light !

Matthew 5: 14-16
You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under the peck measure, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

"Pastor, pray for me that I get more light," requested a man who had fallen into sinful, worldly ways.

The Pastor replied:
"No, I'll not pray for more light for you, but I will pray that you will walk in the light which God has already given to you."

Light is in our hands to do Him honour.

The foolish virgins relied on the oil in their own lamps as many today rely on their own Good, clean, right living.

Like the Rich young man in Luke 18: 18-24, all these things he had kept from his youth -- Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour your Father and Mother.

Jesus said:
One thing you still lack sell all that you possess and distribute it to the poor and you shall have treasure in heaven. Come and follow Me.

Listen to what the Bible says:
Hebrews 12: 14
Follow peace with all men and holiness without which shall no man see the Lord.

Colossians 3: 13
Forbearing one another and forgiving one another if any man have a quarrel against any even as Christ forgave you, so also do you.

Forbear means to abstain, or refrain from, not use or mention, be patient.

Their lamps - those in their hands - did not have sufficient oil to carry them through the door.

Not enough oil to carry us through our present troubles.

Ephesians 2: 8-9
For by grace you have been saved through faith and that not of yourselves it is the gift of God, not as a result of works, that no one should boast.

Give us of your oil they begged the Wise Virgins.
We have enough for the present use, but not enough for after use.

1 Timothy 6: 19
Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come that they may hold on to eternal life.

What about the oil in your lamp ?

I want to share a true story with you.
Many years ago in the Free State, a young man walked into a small Pentecostal Church. A simple Church, but above the pulpit was a light fixture that at one stage was very popular in the Free State - it was an old Ox wagon wheel that was converted into a light fitting and on the circular wheel five lamps had been placed.

Well, when the altar call was made, the young man rushed forwarded crying.

What made you come forward ?
Was it the Sermon ? No ! said the young man.
Was it the Bible reading ? No ! said the young man.
Was it something the Pastor said ?
No ! said the young man.
Was it the music ? No ! said the young man.

Well, why did you come forward ?
The young man said, "You, see I am the youngest of a family of five, I never went to Church, I lived a wild life and my Father before he died reminded me that he would meet the whole family again in heaven, but he then greeted me because he said, unless I turn to God, he would never see me again.

Tonight, when I looked up and saw the lamps on the ox wheel, I noticed that the fifth lamp was busy going out and finally, before the Service ended, it went out completely.
I realized that lamp was a picture of my life."

Friend what about your lamp ?
Are you sure that it is burning sufficiently strong for you to enter heaven's door ? If you had to die today - where will you spend eternity ?

They did not rely on the oil in their lamps - but they took extra oil in extra vessels. They laid up in store a good foundation.

This was easy, because- Oil was in abundance in Israel - used for cooking fuel, lamps, hair, to protect their skin - Many uses !

Oil was cheap.
Israel exported oil to Tyre and to Egypt .
We call them wise. Wise because they were prepared for the coming of Jesus.
Wise because they had extra oil !
You are Wise in coming to Church to hear the Word of God.

Romans 10: 17
So faith comes from hearing and hearing by the Word of Christ.

Yes, like the wise virgins, you will enter into the Kingdom of God, because:
Acts 2: 38
And Peter said to them, Repent and let each of you be baptized in the Name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are afar off as many as the Lord our God shall call to Himself.

Mark 16: 15-16
And He said to them: Go into the world and preach the Gospel to all creation. He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.

When Christ said, "all the world," this includes the house next door, the house on the corner, your suburb - your town - your city - your own country.

But, at midnight there was a shout:
Behold the bridegroom !
Come out to meet Him.
Then, all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps.

And the foolish said to the prudent:
Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out. But, the prudent answered saying:
No, there will not be enough for us and you too.

Go Ye Rather to the dealers and buy some for yourselves. And while they were going away to make the purchase, the Bridegroom came and those who were ready went in with Him to the wedding feast and the door was shut.

And later, the others also came saying:
Lord open up for us.
The door was closed for them - their prayers unanswered - How foolish they were.
To enter, we need to be like the wise,
or do we ?

The foolish asked for help.
Despite the fact that:
Oil was cheap. Oil was plentiful.
The wise had only enough oil for themselves.

Not very Christ like! Only enough for self.
Money- Christmas- No room in the inn.
Time - not enough for the Church
Witnessing. Knowledge.
But not enough to be shared.
Go ye rather to the Pastor, that's what we pay him for. Much Talent, but not enough for the word of God, or for others.

Listen ~~ there is a call for help ~~
I want to enter the Kingdom of God!
Give me a little of your oil.

Only enough to enter...
The foolish said, Share and we all can enter...
The wise said, NO! GO YE RATHER

The foolish went - purchased - confessed their sins - baptized - accepted Christ. But the door was closed; it was too late.
While seeking extra oil - the door was closed !

How different could it have been - they only needed just enough to enter !

Friend, this message
2 Peter 3: 9
The Lord is not slow about His promise as some count slowness but is patient towards you not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

Revelation 22: 12
And behold I come quickly and my reward is with me to give every man according as his works shall be.

Obtain a reward.
The wise entered.....but without the reward of Soul winning

Friend, are you ready to enter into the Kingdom of God ? Friend, are you prepared to help others to enter into the Kingdom of God

Or, will you also say to them: Go ye rather ?

I have no doubt that you will enter the Kingdom of God, friend ! BUT, what about those who have begged you to share with them a little of the oil of God's Word ?

Yes, you will enter the Kingdom of God
- BUT, how? Alone ?

May God help me and this small Church that we may never be the reason that others may find the door to the bridegroom closed because we said to them:
