Bible Reading: John 7: 37 - 53

Text verse: 52.
They replied: Are you from Galilee, too ?
Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.

The Pharisees were angry, and they said to the guards who they had instructed to arrest Jesus:
You mean he has deceived you also ?
He cannot be a prophet !
The mob that follows Him and calls Him a prophet know nothing of the law !
If they knew the Scriptures they would know that a prophet does not come out of Galilee !

Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked:
Does our law condemn anyone without first hearing him, to find out what he is doing ?
They replied: Are you from Galilee, too ?
Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.

Then I remembered the Scripture:
Acts 17: 11
Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians,
for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures
every day to see if what Paul said was true.

And I asked myself:
Were the Pharisees correct in saying that nothing good can come out of Galilee ?
Even Nathanael, one of the Twelve had said:

John 1: 46
And Nathanael said to him: Can any good thing come out of Nazareth ?
Philip said to him: Come and see.

Were the Pharisees correct in saying that a prophet does not come out of Galilee ?

So often we hear people when attempting to prove a point or doctrine quoting the Bible
only to find out later that they have taken a text out of context
and or have claimed that something is in the Bible when in fact it is not !

I decided to search the Scriptures to find out for myself !
I made discoveries that made me jump with joy and I want to share them with you.
But please notice that we are going to delve deep into God's Holy Word today !

The first discovery that I made was:
Isaiah 9: 1
Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress.
In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
but in the future he will honor Galilee of the Gentiles, by the way of the sea, along the Jordan.

What the Pharisees did not tell the people was that yes in the past God did humble the land
of Zebulun but in the future God will honour Galilee of the Gentiles.
And Friend, the future had arrived, the Messiah was from Galilee !

I want you to know that in past you may have known gloom and distress but like Galilee,
God will honour you in the future. God can change your past into joy and honour and happiness.

No one needs to remain under the condemnation of the past !
Galilee, God will change your past condemnation into honour !

Listen to the Scripture:
2 Corinthians 5: 17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come !

Can anything thing good come out of Galilee ?
Why yes, a thousand times yes, because God said that in the future He would honour Galilee !
There is no better way to honour Galilee, then allowing the Messiah to come from Galilee !

Pharisees read the Scriptures again !
The future is now !

But a Prophet out of Galilee ?
Can a Prophet come from Galilee ?
Did a Prophet come from Galilee in the past ?
I began my long search, through the Concordance on my Computor !
Keyed Galilee into my computor, but no prophet was connected with the name Galilee !
Keyed Zebulun into my computor.
Galilee was given to the tribe of Zebulun, perhaps a prophet connected with the tribe of Zebulun.
But again no luck !

The only course left open was to make a list of all the prophets in the Bible
and find out where they were born or where they came from !
And then to look up each town on a map to find out if it was in the Galilee region !

And finally, I found the prophet from Galilee !
The discovery made me jump with joy !

2 Kings 14: 25
He was the one who restored the boundaries of Israel from Lebo Hamath
to the Sea of the Arabah, in accordance with the word of the LORD,
the God of Israel, spoken through his servant Jonah son of Amittai, the prophet from Gath Hepher.

Gath Hepher is found 3 miles (4KM) north-east of Nazareth.
Gath Hepher is found in Galilee !
Gath Hepher belongs to the tribe of Zebulun.

Jeroboam, was the longest reigning King of Israel.
He reigned 41 years.
A King that did evil in the sight of the Lord.
During his reign God raised up a Prophet, Jonah the son of Amittai, a Galilean, to speak him.
The Bible tells us that Jeroboam listened to this Prophet from Galilee and restored the borders of Israel !

But wait, Jonah - have we not heard of this Prophet elsewhere in the Bible ?
Why yes, Jonah, son of Amittai of 2 Kings 14: 25 is the same Jonah, son of Amittai found in:

Jonah 1: 1
The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai.

I then went to all my Bible Dictionaries and yes it was the same:
Jonah, the Prophet that was swallowed by a whale !
Jonah the Prophet that preached in Nineveh !

But why would the Pharisees claim that no Prophet ever came from Galilee,
when in fact Jonah came from Galilee ?

And then I remembered the words of Jesus:
Matthew 12: 38-40
Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him:
Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you.
He answered: A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign !
But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish,
so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

The sign of Jonah - But what was the sign of Jonah ?
Surely there is more to the sign of Jonah than Jesus just talking about His death,
if the Pharisees did not want the people to know that a Prophet came from Galilee !

To understand the sign of Jonah we need to learn more about Jonah.

Jonah the name means: Dove

The dove pointed to Jonah.
The dove was an alternative offering for Jews who could not afford a lamb.

Then I remembered that even John the Baptist asked God for a sign so that he could recognise the Messiah ! When John the Baptist saw the Holy Spirit descending on Jesus in the form of a dove
it was a fulfilment of the Sign God had promised him - the sign of Jonah !

John 1: 33
I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me:
The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.

The Sign of the Dove.
Jesus was the sacrifice for the Common man.
The poor man who could not afford the normal sacrifice.
The Sign of Jonah, the dove, proves that Jesus died for you and I.

The Sign of Jonah proves that Jesus is the Saviour of the world.
He remained in the grave three days and three nights in fulfilment of the Old Testament Prophecy.

But the sign of Jonah also reminds us of the message of Jonah.
Jonah preached a message of repentance to the city of Nineveh.
God the Father wanted to spare and save the City of Nineveh
and so He sent Jonah to warn them to repent.

John 3: 16
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son,
that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.

Jesus came to preach the same message that Jonah preached, a message of repentance,
a reminder that we need to turn from sin and turn to God !

Nivneveh, repented and was spared.
The only Question that needs to be answered in this day is:
Have you repented of your sins and turned to God, and will you be saved on the day of Judgement !

Friend don't listen to the Pharisees:
A Prophet did come from Galilee and he points us to the Messiah !

And the Messiah Jesus says:
John 14: 6
Jesus said to him:
I am the way, and the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father, but through Me.

No matter what your past - Galilee was treated in the past with contempt, in her was anguished and gloom.
But God changed Galilee into a glorious place, a place of honour, the place of the Messiah.

What God did for Galilee, He can do for you !

Luke 18: 27
But He said: The things impossible with men are possible with God.

Hebrews 13: 8
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, yes and forever.
