I WILL NOT LEAVE THEE

Bible Reading: 2 Kings 2: 1-14

Text verse 9
And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha,
Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee.
And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.

Did you notice the words:
Let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me ?

It is my hope, that each one present, this very day, will call out:
LORD, let a double portion of THY Holy Spirit be upon me !

But I want you to notice that before Elisha could receive that double portion he
needed to travel with Elijah to four places:
Gilgal - Bethel - Jericho and finally he needed to cross the Jordan River.

Reading the account it would seem that Elijah was merely visiting the various schools
of the sons of the prophets in order to greet them before his departure
BUT was this the only reason that he visited these four places ?

A good e-mail friend of mine -
Barbara DiGilio of Mayim Hayim Ministries
is attributed with having coined the word Shemology.
Shemology is the study of the meanings of Biblical Names.

And it is only when we examine the meanings of the Names of these four places visited
by Elijah and Elisha that we understand what Elisha needed to do before he could
receive a double portion of the Spirit of Elijah.
And likewise what we need to do, before we too can receive,
a double portion of the Holy Spirit in our lives !

1. Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal

Listen carefully to what Elijah said to Elisha at Gilgal:
Stay here, I command you; for the LORD hath sent me to Bethel.
And Elisha answers him:
As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee.

As I read these words I was reminded of the words of Peter and the other disciples of Jesus.

Luke 22:33
And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.

Matthew 26:35
Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee.
Likewise also said all the disciples.

Words spoken in haste - A promise made which was not kept at the time.

Elijah and Elisha are at Gilgal.
But why was it important for them to be at Gilgal ?
Gilgal the name means in the Past or a rolling away.
But why was this place given this name ?
To understand the significance of the name we must examine what happened at Gilgal.
Listen to what happened:

Joshua 5:9
And the LORD said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt
from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day.

Notice - This day I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you.

We have a Chorus we sing in this Church:
Jesus took my burdens and he rolled them in the sea !

Gilgal is the place of repentance - the place where the LORD removes our sins.
Before the Promised Land could be conquered
- The Children of Israel had to be circumcised -
they had to make a commitment to their LORD !
The sins of Egypt had to be left behind.
Gilgal was the place of a new beginning.

Have you stood still at Gilgal ?
And made a decision to leave the sins of the past behind !

Elisha says:
As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee.

Likewise Peter said to JESUS:
John 6:68
Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go?
thou hast the words of eternal life.

What will you say this day ?

2. They they went down to Bethel

Leaving Gilgal - the place where sins are rolled away - they continued to Bethel.
Bethel meaning the House of God or House of Prayer.
Once again Elisha says:
After the As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee.

How different was it not at the Garden of Gethsemane when JESUS asked HIS
disciples to prayer with HIM.

Matthew 26:40
And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter,
What, could ye not watch with me one hour?

We desire the infilling of the Holy Spirit but are we willing to spend time at
Bethel - the House of Prayer ?

3. So they came to Jericho

Leaving the place of Prayer the continued to Jericho.
Jericho means Sweet Fragrance.
But remember it was the first town that the Children of Israel encountered when they
entered the Promised land !
And itís walls had to fall !
Jericho was a symbol of Sin in the Land - A house of Sin that had to be destroyed
before the Promised Land could be settled !

The land must be cleansed of sin - sin must be destroyed !
Friend, without holiness - listen to the word of God:

Hebrews 12:14
Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.

Friend, we are called to a life of holiness if we wish to dwell in the Promised Land !

Listen to the words of the Apostle Paul:
Ephesians 5:18
And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.

How can a drunk person be compared to a person who is filled with the Spirit ?
Ever noticed a drunk person ?
He canít walk in a straight line !
He talks funny - slurs ! Often speaks a load of trash !
He does things that no sober person would ever consider doing - like wrapping his car
around a lamp-post - abusing his wife and children !

A person filled with the Spirit in contrast:
Walks differently to the World !
Talks differently to the World !
And acts differently to those in the World !

To receive a Double portion of the Spirit, Elisha needed to continue !
To receive the infilling of the Holy Spirit we too need to continue on !

4. Elijah and Elisha stood by Jordan River.

Stay Here says Elijah to Elisha !
But Elisha answers:
As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee.

On the Day of Pentecost - the crowd cried out:
What must we do ?
The answer:
Acts 2:38
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of
Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Friend, Elisha had to go through the Jordan River.
Jordan means descend or the river of Judgement !
Paul, says of Baptism:
Romans 6:4
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death:
that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father,
even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Baptism is a burial - Have you buried your old life ?
It is a mere symbol of what is needed to be done before
you can receive the infilling of the Holy Spirit.

5. The Other side

Listen to what happened on the other side:
2 Kings 2:9-11
And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what
I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a
double portion of thy spirit be upon me. And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing:
nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if
not, it shall not be so. And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that,
behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both
asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

And so it was - Elisha received a double portion of the Spirit !
Elisha needed to go from:
Gilgal - the place of repentance to
Bethal - the House of Prayer to
Jericho - the place where the walls of sin must come tumbling down
- descend down in and cross the river of Jordan - the River of God
before he received a double portion of the Holy Spirit !

Friend, if you are prepared to travel the same road you too will receive the infilling of
the Holy Spirit. Do not be afraid to ask for the Holy Spirit !
Listen to the Words of Jesus:

Luke 11:10-13
For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that
knocketh it shall be opened. If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will
he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? Or if he
shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If ye then, being evil, know how to give
good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the
Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

This portion is also found in Matthew but ends with the words:
Matthew 7:11
If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more
shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

16. In Closing

Elijah went up into the heaven by a whirlwind.
Listen what happened further:

2 Kings 2:13-14
He (Elisha) took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and
stood by the bank of Jordan; And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and
smote the waters, and said, Where is the LORD God of Elijah? and when he also had
smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.

Perhaps, this day you are calling out:
Where is the LORD God of Elijah ?
Well, I have news for you - listen what the Word of God says:

Matthew 18:20
For where two or three are gathered together in my name,
there am I in the midst of them.

Friend, the LORD has not changed:
Malachi 3:6
For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

Neither has HIS Son:
Hebrews 13:8
Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

HE parted the River of Jordan for Elisha !
And He can part the River of Problems whether they be financial , family or work
related - the river of sickness - the river of loneliness - the river of depression or
whatever river it may be that you are facing this very day.

BUT remember Elisha first had to travel with Elijah from
Gilgal - the place of repentance to Bethal - the House of Prayer
to Jericho - the place where the walls of sin must come tumbling down
- descend down and cross the river of Jordan -
the River of God before he experienced his miracle of the parting of the water.

And you prepared to walk with Jesus ?
John 14:6
Jesus saith unto him,
I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

1 John 3:8
He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this
purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
