David in a Cave

David in a Cave

Bible Reading
:
1 Samuel 22: 1-5

Text verse:

1 Samuel 22:1 KJV
David therefore departed thence,
and escaped to the cave
Adullam:
and when his brethren and all his father's house
heard it, they went down thither to him.

David escaped to the cave
Adullam!
David in a Cave!
We find David in a Cave!
This is the man who had the World at his feet.
David who conquered Goliath.
The Hero of all Israel.

1 Samuel 18:7
KJV
And the women answered one another
as they played, and said,
Saul hath slain his thousands,
and David his ten thousands.

This same David
,
is found in a Cave some 19Km (12 miles)
West, South, West of Bethlehem near the
town of
Adullam.
David was in a sad condition
:
He had lost his home,
lost his wife,
lost his job in the Palace,
Lost his
Counsellor and Adviser,
lost his closest and only true friend, Jonathan,
was without food.
because he had fled from King Saul
who was seeking to kill him.
He even had lost his self respect.

Remember he had to pretend to be insane.
1 Samuel 21:11-13
KJV
And the servants of
Achish said unto him,
Is not this David the king of the land?
did they not sing one to another of him in dances,
saying, Saul hath slain his thousands,
and David his ten thousands?
And David laid up these words in his heart,
and was sore afraid of
Achish the king of Gath.
And he changed his
behaviour before them,
and feigned himself mad in their hands,
and scrabbled on the doors of the gate,
and let his spittle fall down upon his beard.

DAVID JOINED BY OTHERS
We read in
:
1 Samuel 22:1 KJV
David therefore departed thence,
and escaped to the cave
Adullam:
and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it,
they went down thither to him.

The first persons to join him were his family -
Parents and Brothers!
Interesting David makes provision for his Parents
by taking them to the King of Moab:

1 Samuel 22:3 KJV
And David went thence to
Mizpeh of Moab:
and he said unto the king of Moab,
Let my father and my mother, I pray thee,
come forth, and be with you,
till I know what God will do for me.

Remember the commandments of God
:
Exodus 20:12 KJV
Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days
may be long upon the land which the LORD
thy God
giveth thee.

Matthew 6:33
KJV
But seek ye first the kingdom of God,
and his righteousness; and all these things
shall be added unto you.

David is in a Cave – His life is in danger!
But He still obeys the Word of God!
Are you in a Cave this morning,
then remember
the Commandments and promises of God.

But then others joined him:
1 Samuel 22:2 KJV
And every one that was in distress,
and every one that was in debt,
and every one that was discontented,
gathered themselves unto him;
and he became a captain over them:
and there were with him about four hundred men.

400 men all with problems – what a group?
Those in distress – discontented – in debt!
What can he do with such a crowd?
His problems just became greater!
Sometimes this Text reminds me of our Church!

WAITING ON GOD
But something happened in the Cave notice:
1 Samuel 22:3 KJV
And David went thence to
Mizpeh of Moab:
and he said unto the king of Moab,
Let my father and my mother, I pray thee,
come forth, and be with you,
till I know what God will do for me.

Till I know what God will do for me!
David turned his Cave into a House of Prayer!
Sheltering behind a Rock – He prayed!
Perhaps you feel like David – in a Cave!
Turning to God became the turning point in David’s life!

May I say at this point
:
A Good Christian is one who depends on God.
One who cannot see the future without God!

Do you feel like crying – Turn to God!
Listen to what David would later write
:
Psalm 27:14
Wait on the LORD: be of good courage,
and he shall strengthen
thine heart: wait,
I say, on the LORD.

SOMETHING HAPPENED
In that Cave something happened that caused David to later write:
Psalm 37:25
I have been young, and now am old;
yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken,
nor his seed begging bread.

Those 400 men changed!
And they became David’s Mighty men!
They became Heroes in David’s army!

Pray changed them!
The promises of God changed them!
They were in a Cave but they turned
that Cave into a meeting place with God!
They became Doers of the Word!
Victory became theirs!
Friend, victory over the attacks of the devil
can be yours too if you turn to God in Prayer -
Stand on His promises and follow His Word!

You may have been brought down to a Cave
But God is in your Cave!
A Cave can be a good place if you turn to God.
Go in sad but come out singing God’s Promises!

CONCLUSION
Later David was made King over all Israel.
We read of something very interesting in
:
2 Samuel 23:13 KJV
And three of the thirty chief went down,
and came to David in the harvest time
unto the cave of
Adullam:
and the troop of the Philistines pitched
in the valley of
Rephaim.

1 Chronicles 11:15 KJV
Now three of the thirty captains went down
to the rock to David, into the cave of
Adullam;
and the host of the Philistines encamped
in the valley of
Rephaim.

The Cave of
Adullam served as Military Headquarters
during David’s campaign against the Philistines.

That cave became a place of Victory in David’s life!
Those in the Cave became mighty warriors!
You too can become a mighty warrior!
Prayer can change your life
:
We today need to remember:
Malachi 3:6 KJV
For I am the LORD, I change not;
therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

God still answers prayer!
But in closing -
In the Cave if you read the Psalms of David
carefully you will also notice that David
repented of his past sins!

Victory only really comes when you turn to God.
But turning to God means leaving behind your
old ways and sin and following God fully!

We need God’s Cave to commit ourselves
fully to God!
Do you want victory in your life?
Then it is time to heed the Call of God in your life!

We may be in a Cave today -
But with God -
We will be Victorious!

Amen
