Situated on the
Durbanville Wine Route, Clara Anna Fontein is the only
private game reserve within the greater Cape Town
Metropolitan area.
The reserve is
home to eleven indigenous species of wild animal such as
zebra, wildebeest, eland and rhebok which roam free on some
of the last remaining renosterveld (indigenous bush type) in
the Western Cape. |
|
The farm was
established in 1702 and was originally owned by one Beatrice
Verwey, the first woman to be an independant farmer at the
Cape of Good Hope.
The Cape Dutch
Manor house dates from 1778, and although damaged by fire it
was restored during the 1920's.
Game was
reintroduced to the farm more than a decade ago and efforts
are currently underway to rehabilitate the flora. |
