Rüppell's Vulture

Blouberg Conservation Project

BLOUBERG VULTURE PROJECT
  • Situated on the southern cliffs of the mountain, east of the main Blouberg Mountain is the largest breeding colony of the endangered Cape Griffon Vulture in southern Africa, having in the vicinity of 700 breeding pairs.

This is an endemic species, its numbers declining throughout its range.

This incapacitated Cape Griffon Vulture was brought to BLOUCON by children from the local community. After the necessary rehabilitation, it was released and was later located in Bloemfontein - some 700km away!

  • There are 2 nesting sites approximately 750 metres apart, the western sub-colony which is located just outside the western boundary of the Blouberg Nature Reserve, while the eastern sub-colony falls within the reserve.

  • When we commenced with the environmental education programme we discovered that there were certain problems facing this colony, namely:

    1. The "muthi-trade"

    2. Ignorance and/or intolerance of some of the local farming community

    3. Calcium deficiency resulting in Metabolic Bone Disease (Osteodystrophy)
