Blouberg Conservation Project

BLOUBERG REPTILE PROJECT
  • Captive-bred juvenile Black Mamba (Status: vulnerable). In excess of 40 Black Mambas have been bred by BLOUCON and released into the wild under the personal supervision and care of Peter Snyman.

A number of different species of reptiles are housed at our centre on a permanent basis and form part of the educational courses that we offer. Although not a formal captive breeding programme, when breeding does occur the offspring are released in carefully researched protected areas. Care is taken to ensure that the relevant species does occur in such areas and we also take great care not to release venomous snakes in areas where they could be dangerous to people. We have maintained an intensive awareness campaign as to the role reptiles play in the ecosystem since the commencement of our project with very positive results. We receive "call outs" to remove snakes from both farmers and residents in local villages almost on a daily basis which is extremely encouraging as previously these individuals would have killed the snakes. This includes venomous snakes, as well as non-venomous indicating that there is definitely a better understanding of the necessity to conserve these reptiles. This is a service that we offer to the community free of any charge. We also consult at both the Polokwane Provincial Hospital as well as the private hospital in the event of cases involving snakebite or scorpion stings. The Limpopo Province Emergency Services also attend lectures regularly on venomous snake identification and the treatment of snakebite.

  • African Python (Status: vulnerable). Peter was called out to collect it. He relocated it onto the reserve.
