Rüppell's Vulture

Blouberg Conservation Project

RESERVE SIGHTS

Some other things to see in the Blouberg Nature Reserve:

  • This large Baobab Tree can be observed on the reserve. It houses Barn Owls, which breed inside it. It is over 1000 years old.

  • Foam Nest Frog, otherwise known as the Grey Tree Frog.

  • A interestingly marked moth to be found in the reserve.

  • A beautifully coloured moth to be found in the reserve.

  • Attractive butterflies also to be found in the reserve.

  • A Pangolin brought in by someone to BLOUCON and released in the reserve. Note the size of the coiled Pangolin against Janine's hand.

  • The Department of Environmental Affairs removed this baby fox from people living in a townhouse in Pietersburg. BLOUCON, with the help of the Snyman's ertswhile resident male Alsation "Eiko" (sadly now deceased), raised and released the fox on the reserve. The fox had bonded with Eiko maternally, and Eiko in this way had acted as its surrogate mother! What a gracious dog! Isn't nature wonderful?

  • A Horned-backed Baboon Spider found in the reserve, but don't worry, only when you're out looking for it! (If you're interested in spiders, see the following website at Spiders Online.)

  • Vultures feeding on a carcass on the reserve.

  • Some other birdlife on the reserve.

  • A Secretary Bird perched on a tree in the reserve.

  • Warthog at waterhole used by vultures.

  • Kudu cow on the reserve.

  • Vultures bathing, unconcerned with approaching giraffes coming to drink.

  • Baboons at vulture waterhole.

  • Giraffe on the reserve.

  • We have had our own Teenage Mutant Ninja Vulture! But he rehabilitated and was released! Doesn't this dude look just so cool?
