Rüppell's Vulture

Blouberg Conservation Project

Our Future

Since 1993 our project has become an important and integral part of the local community. We have also played a vital part in the continued survival and well being of the Blouberg Cape Vulture colony that in turn has the potential to contribute towards benefiting the local communities. Our contribution to both the environment and the local people of the area was recognised by the Audi Terra Nova Awards nomination that we received in November 2003. We have been encouraged as well by the commendations and support that we have received from both individuals and organisations throughout the world. This project has the full endorsement and backing of Dr Ian Player of the Wilderness Trust, the Endangered Wildlife Trust, the Vulture Study Group, the Raptor Conservation Group, the Conservation Departments of Saxony and Brandenburg in Germany and is under the patronage of the World Working Group of Birds of Prey and Owls. It can therefore be seen that this project has an international support base - as well as the acceptance and support of our local communities.

Our project is people-driven and therefore focuses on their needs and the needs of their environment. Our belief is that conservation is for people, it's so that the quality of life of people is improved through having a healthy environment. In order to have a healthy environment we need to conserve our natural resources and education is the key. No one project can "save the world" but the contribution our project is making, no matter how small in the grand scheme of things, is changing attitudes and affecting lives for the better. Conserving the biodiversity of this area of South Africa through our community-based conservation programmes and at the same time bringing about development in these previously underprivileged areas is the ultimate goal of our project.
