ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
  • We have established an Environmental Education Centre on the reserve that comprises a lecture hall, exhibit area for skeletons, photographs and other items of educational interest, a raptor and vulture information centre, enclosures with captive owls, raptors and vultures that are non-rehabilitatable, a small clinic and reptile exhibition centre.

We host groups at our centre for courses on a wide variety of topics including conservation of natural resources, energy cycles, the value of trees and other flora, general identification of mammals, reptiles and birds, animal adaptation, soil erosion and preventative measures, trench gardening, the role of vultures and birds of prey in the ecosystem, identification of snake species and the treatment of snakebite, the correct use of poisons and "natural control" together with demonstrations and wilderness trails.

These courses are available to all members of the public and groups that have attended these courses since 1993 have ranged from school children, women's clubs, church groups, cultural clubs, sports teams, pensioners, farmers, labourers to university students, specialist groups, government employees, and tourists.

Lecture by Peter Snyman to local school group at the reserve.

Specialised game guard courses have also been held assisting the Department of Agriculture, Land and the Environment with the training of their personnel. Hand in hand with the courses at our centre goes the work in the communities themselves.

We give lectures at schools, clubs, various institutions and interaction and discussions are held with local tribal authorities, committees and organisations.

The local farming communities play a key role in the conservation of the environment and as such we encourage them to work together with the environmental education programme. A close relationship between our project and the local farming community has been forged.
