FEEDBACK ON CAMPS THAT WERE HELD
HOUT BAY CAMP - SUMMER 1999

The Branch's 2nd camp this year was held at the YMCA camp site in Hout Bay. 44 children, 9 youth leaders, 5 adults and 3 visitors from Roche attended the camp. We were blessed with good weather, so the children were able to play on the beach and build sand castles, enjoying these outdoor activities. Each team did a skit and played indoor games in the evenings. Karen Denton from Roche presented an interactive puppet show on diabetes. The Hout Bay Lions and Leos organised the Sunday lunch braai. The children had a wonderful time and made many new friends. They can't wait for the next camp which will start on 15 April 2000.

PIETERMARITZBURG CAMP - SUMMER 1999

A delightful camp with a record of 28 children from all over the province was held in glorious weather.

The children had a ball abseiling, canoeing and hurdling over the obstacle course and in addition, we had 2 events which added a great deal of liveliness to the week-end.

Our very efficient and lovable doctor, Dr Leila Mayet and her enthusiastic nursing sister, Rene Tapson, were on night patrol checking on the children when they almost stepped on a snake - how big ? According to Sister Rene about 2 meters long and Dr Leila's 20 cm. Anyway it's debatable who had the biggest fright, the snake or the ladies !

The 2nd event was when little Sphe Nyandeni chased a ball into the lake and was rapidly out of his depth. Bradley Moore, small in stature but brave in heart, jumped in and rescued Sphe seconds before a member of the training staff could assist.

Generally a good time was had by all, highlighted by Tanaelle Heldsinger and Deon Botha setting a record for mixed pairs on the obstacle course !

WAG 'N BIEJTIE CAMP - SEPTEMBER 2000

Nestling among the hills, Wag 'n Bietjie is an idylic spot. The beautiful bushveld near Warmbaths calls out to weary city souls to relax and recuperate.

But relaxation and recuperation were not on the agenda when 20 young people were invited by LifeScan to Join Dr Jacobus van Dyk on a camping and hiking weekend. Ages ranged from 12 to 17 and genders were pretty much 50/50 which resulted in a fairly even "war".

With respect to the general fitness levels and not moaning about the hiking, the boys won ! But the girls were way about in creativity, both in the concert on Saturday night, as well as the "deodorant war" that they waged with the boys. And if one takes the tremendous amount of eating into account, it would have to be a draw !

It was great fun and very educational besides - memories to carry us forward till next time.

FROGGY POND CAMP - 6 - 8 OCTOBER 2000

The above camp at Froggy Pond was a great success with an attendance of 50 including 12 leaders, kitchen volunteers and nurses. The children watched whales, visited the Toy Museum, went on a hike and participated in outdoor games. Short diabetes education sessions took place during the weekend.

The Lions Club of Fishhoek transported the children to the Toy Museum, took charge of the Sunday Braai and made a generous donation towards the camps.

The camp was made possible by a R5000 donation from Old Mutual.

Test strips were supplied by Roche Diagnostics and platforms and lancets by Bayer.
