Shumba Safaris, home of the legendary lion prides of the late J.P.Kleinhans, offers visitors a unique African experience. Situated near Patensie, in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, Shumba is a game farm that provides conference, holiday and hunting facilities. The safari ranch was established 10 years ago with purchase of the land and many of the original game species have since been re-introduced into the area. Elephant trails can still be seen on the property where they roamed more than 100 years ago. Shumba Safaris have worked in conjunction with the Department of Nature Conservation in their efforts to create an eco-tourism resort.

GAME SPECIES

At Shumba, the lions of the Eastern Cape have been re-established. Also abundant on the farm are many species of buck. Blue Wildebees, Black Wildebees, Zebra, Cape Buffalo, Brown Hyena, Kudu, Eland, Blesbok, Common Duiker, Blue Duiker, Cape Grysbok, White Blesbok, Bontebok, Bushbuck, Nyala, Impala, Common Springbok and Black Springbok

HUNTING

Shumba Safaris cater for both Rifle and Bow Hunting, specialising in the hunting of Lions.

TAXIDERMY

Taxidermy is done on the farm by J.P. Kleinhans (jnr.) who completed his taxidermy course in the United States of America, on mammals, birds and fish.

LOCATION

Shumba Safaris is 80 km from Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa, and easily accessable from the N2 national road. The surrounding area is renowned for its beautiful beaches, indigenous forests, hiking trails and mountainous natural beauty. Shumba is ideally situated for day trips to the Paul Sauer Dam, Addo Elephant Park, Cocks Comb mountain range, Jeffrey's Bay, the Garden Route and the friendly city: Port Elizabeth.

Bontebok ACCOMODATION

A select number of guests are accomodated in delightful African-styled thatched rondavels, all of them en-suite and equipped with overhead fans, electrical lighting and accomodation for four people. The rondavels are built in the indigenous forest on the hillside overlooking the Gamtoos Valley and provide guests with privacy whilst being within 100 m of the main lapa.

CATERING

As the sun sets, enjoy a cocktail around the pool. Meals are provincial South African cuisine and are enjoyed in the central lapa overlooking the Cocks Comb mountain range and the Gamtoos Valley. Local specialities include venison from the farm as well as homemade preserves and herbs grown in the veld.

SPORT AND RECREATION

Enjoy game viewing by either taking a guided game drive in an open vehicle, go for a spotlight night drive, horse ride or game hike through the farm accompanied by one of Shumba's hosts. Or go birdwatching with a picnic lunch in one of the various hides available for guests on the farm. Sporting facilities include swimming, horse riding, and hiking on the farm whilst golf, tennis, squash, bowling, sailing, boating and fishing are available nearby.

Kudu CLIMATE

The mild winters and hot summers are ideal for game viewing and provide many opportunities for outdoor activities.

CONFERENCE

Conference facilities are available for smaller conferences of up to 45 people.Overnight accomodation is available for 28 people. Extra accomodation is available in the nearby towns of Patensie (5km) and Hankey (7km). Conferences are customised to suit the customer's needs and include sightseeing, game drives and ethnic meals in the veld.

RESERVATIONS

Reservations can be made by either Fax or Telephone bookings at all hours. A deposit of 25% is required on confirmation of the booking.
