CITY & GUILDS - INTRODUCTION
Information Technology Schemes
1. Introduction to Information Technology Schemes 7261
and 4242
1.1 Main features of the schemes
The 7261 scheme has been and is being developed in order to meet the
needs of a wide range of people requiring nationally recognized qualifications
in Information Technology and its component disciplines. The 4242
scheme is intended to enable candidates to acquire an awareness of the
broad spectrum of Information Technology.
The main features of the schemes are:
a) a modular structure which provides self-contained units each covering
an area of information technology.
a) Each syllabus is presented in objective format (precise statements
of what the candidate needs to achieve in order to meet the requirements
of the scheme).
a) Progress is made a pace determined by the candidate and tutor.
No time restrictions are given.
a) Assessment is administered by the centre and can be undertaken by
the candidate at any time. Assessment material is provided as part
of the scheme documentation. A system of monitoring by means of external
verifiers maintains validity and standardization of assessment results
in different centres.
a) The modules will permit candidates and tutors to select and undertake
those which meet individual and local requirements.
a) The 'self pacing' and 'on demand assessment' features of the schemes
permit flexible scheduling and open study methods to be employed.
1.1 Structure of the schemes
The 7261 scheme is made up of a number of modules. The modules
are grouped under three disciplines
-
Computer programming and software
-
Electronics and hardware
-
Computer applications and related studies
Modules are at one of four levels:
1. (formerly Introductory)
2. (formerly Elementary)
3. (formerly Intermediate)
4. (formerly Advanced).
Available modules and schemes are listed under the links on the course
page. Further modules and schemes are being developed and will
be introduced in a priority order according to demand.
Each module document contains aims, syllabus, objectives, assessment
procedures and material and associated appendices.
1.3 Flexibility of the schemes
The schemes' flexibility allows and provides for transfer and
progress at all levels within the schemes. Both 7261 and 4242 can
be undertaken at centres of all types including colleges, IteCs, schools,
private training centres of 'in-company'. They can be used by candidates
of varying ages and abilities on a full time, part time, day release, evening
class or open/distance learning basis.
A prime feature of the schemes is that the objectives should be met
at a pace appropriate to individual candidates and no time limits are imposed
for any module. For guidance, however, the following time bands may
be useful.
7261 Information Technology
1. (Introductory) - 30-60 hours per module
2. (Elementary) - 60-90 hours per module
3. (Intermediate) - 60-90 hours per module
4. (Advanced) - 100-150 hours per module
