DESCRIPTION

Secure Copy's seamless migration allows an administrator
to copy files and directories on NTFS partitions while keeping
the security intact, creating shares,
and migrating local groups. All of this functionality
is available in an easy to use GUI, which keeps you updated
on copy progress, as well as any errors that may occur.
Retain security while you copy
If you use Windows NT Explorer or the copy and
xcopy commands to copy files, the file permissions
are not copied with the file. However, with Secure Copy,
you can move the files along with their permissions.
Create shares while copying
Migrate existing shares on the source server to the destination
server. As Secure Copy copies each folder, it first checks
to see if that folder is shared. If so, Secure Copy will
create the share on the destination server and copy the permissions
to the share. This outstanding feature makes Secure Copy
worth the investment.
Migrate local groups while copying
Secure Copy is the only tool available that will migrate
local groups while copying files. (A local group is local to
the machine it was created on.) If a local group has permissions
on a file in your source server, Secure Copy will create
the local group on the destination server and modify the permissions
list on the destination file to reflect the newly created local
group. If you were to use the "scopy.exe" program
in the NT resource kit, every local group would appear as "Account
Unknown" in the destination file's permissions list. If
the local group name already exists on the destination server,
you can be prompted for a new name or select a prefix or postfix
naming convention.
Full Command Line Support
Secure Copy is fully functional directly from the command
line.
BENEFITS
- Keep the security intact,
- Fully functional directly from the command line,
- Migrate local groups while copying files,
- Move the files along with their permissions.
FREQUENTELY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why do I need Secure Copy?
When using native Windows NT copying methods such as NT Explorer,
the copy command or xcopy command, file permissions do
not get copied along with the data. If you are copying
to and from NTFS partitions, you need Secure Copy to copy
the file permissions along with the file data.
I noticed that when I use another security copying
tool all the Local Groups permissions on the source computer show
up as Account Unknown on the destination server s files. Why does
this happen and will Secure Copy fix it?
Each group and user in NT has a unique Security Identifier
(or SID) associated with it on creation. Local group SID s are
only known on the machine they were created on. Therefore, when
the permissions get moved to a new computer, the new computer
doesn t know how to translate the other server s local group s
SID and you get Account unknown . The reason this occurs is because
other programs, like scopy.exe , simply copy the Security Descriptor
along with the file. This is fine in some, but not all cases.
Secure Copy will allow you to migrate Local Groups from
the source server to the destination server while copying files.
This means that if you have a local group Accounting on the source
server, Security Explorer will create the same local group on
the destination server, add all the members to the group, and
migrate the permissions to the destination server s files while
copying. This ensures you have the exact permissions on the destination
server as you had on the source server.
Is there a command line interface for batch file copying?
Yes, Secure Copy has a full GUI and command line interface. If you are
just moving a couple of shares, it might be easier to open the GUI and fill in a simple
form. However, if you are migrating several servers in your domain to new servers, you
might want to create a batch file to do this off-hours. The following is the command line
syntax you can read more about it in the help file.
What about file shares? I ve got 100 file shares on
one drive, can Secure Copy help me create the shares on the destination
server?
Yes. In fact, Secure Copy has the option to migrate all file shares to
the destination server while copying the files. As Secure Copy is moving through folders
in your directory hierarchy, it will check each directory to see if it is shared on the
source server. If so, it will create the same share with the same permissions on the
destination server.
