CIRCUS CASE SENTENCE   - April 9, 1999

Mary Chipperfield Cawley and Roger Cawley Sentencing at Aldershot Magistrates Court, Hampshire, UK, today 9th April 1999:-

Mary Cawley:
For 12 counts of cruelty to Trudy chimpanzee, £7,500 UK pounds sterling fine.

Roger Cawley:
For 1 count of cruelty to Flora African elephant, £1,000 UK pounds sterling fine

and to pay the following costs:-

Half of costs of Crown Prosecution Service, £3,750 UK pounds sterling
Half of costs of police investigation, £3,490
A contribution of £5,000 UK pounds sterling towards cost of Animal Defenders' private prosecution/funding of Crown case - evidence tapes, witness statements, experts, summonses and legal fees (our legal costs were £57,000 with a further £17,000 of special evidence tapes/documents/evidence indexes of 625.5 hours of videotape).

However, we were appalled that the Crown ignored our request that the Magistrate be advised of his powers at sentencing, in that he could have cancelled Mary Chipperfield Promotions Limited's Dangerous Wild Animals Act licence, and had Mary Chipperfield Cawley's name removed from the UK's performing Animals Act register.

Now, the Animal Defenders must continue to fund further campaigns and legal proceedings to have these permits taken away from the Cawleys, in order that the conviction for cruelty does not become a farce. Anyone convicted of cruelty should have such permits withdrawn, and should not be allowed to continue in the animal training business.

So good news today, but there is a way to go before all the animals are saved.

Also, Chipperfields have voluntarily resolved to transfer ownership of Trudy (the chimp) to Monkey World. So Trudy stays where she is.
