Classification

Chimpanzees belong to the mammalian order Primata, family Hominidae. There are two species of chimpanzees:

• Pan troglodytes verus - Western Chimpanzee
• Pan troglodytes troglodytes - Central Chimpanzee
• Pan troglodytes schweinfurthi - Eastern Chimpanzee
• Pan troglodytes - Chimpanzee
• Pan paniscus - Dwarf or pygmy chimpanzee, or Bonobo
