The main welfare organisation is the Afrikaanse
Christelike Vrouevereniging (ACVV) which was established in Cape Town in 1904. The
Franschhoek branch was opened in 1985.
The main objective is the safety of children which includes the feeding (soup kitchen) and
the provision of food for creches with funds from the National Feeding Scheme (NFS);
literacy courses are also provided.
There was only one social worker and this has now been increased by 3 additional
secondments under the Belgian teachers secondment programme, which provides for a clinical
psychologist, an occupational therapist and a further social worker. The main thrust of
this programme is in life skills training and in the handling of handicapped children.
The Franschhoek Voluntary Home Nursing and Hospice Service was established in 1986 and is
affiliated to the Hospice Association of the Western Cape and the Hospice Association of
Southern Africa.
This is an association of volunteers who look after the sick and terminally ill in the
Franschhoek Valley. Their nurses and councillors are on 24 hour call. The services are
free of charge and rendered regardless of race or religion.
The Belgian Government is funding a service centre for both Hospice and the ACVV. This
will be completed at a cost of half a million Rands by the end of 1998.
