A year ago we called for matriculants from the
Groendal High School for 3 applicants to study chocolate making and confectionary in
Belgium. We received 20 applications and selected the 3 who arrived in Belgium in July
1997 and were placed with well-known chocolate makers.
They have now been trained and are due to return to South Africa in August when premises
will either be leased to them or built for them.
They will be guided by the project manager seconded from Belgium who is a specialist in
small business enterprises. Hopefully, after a few years they will be successful and able
to acquire, at cost, the premises and machinery provided for them. The above example is
the basic attitude we have adopted. We do not train people without creating an opportunity
to directly employ them or preferably to set them up in their own business. A substantial
portion of the donation available is for the building of premises for this purpose.
Another example of this approach is that when buying computers and training teachers we
have an undertaking from the supplier that he will use our computer trainees as a major
portion of his labour pool and will tend to sell the computer with the computer operator,
particularly as he retails in the rural areas amongst the farming community.
Further jobs are being created by training people in the hospitality industry.
Every building being erected will contain a certain number of trainees so that building
skills can be acquired in the community.
Eventually a distance learning centre will be built and will offer matriculants studies in
bookkeeping, accountancy, typing and secretarial practice.
25 matriculants are to be sent to Belgium to work as au pairs. |
