The economic base of Franschhoek is
very narrow and suffers from seasonality in that the main pillars of this base are
agriculture and tourism.
There is no sustainable or commendable commercial, light industrial or service industry
base to the local economy.
The dependence on agriculture is also dependent on climate (El Nino) and on the export
market.
The amount of land under agriculture is declining because of the demand for housing and
this will leave more agricultural workers unemployed.
Because tourism is seasonal and subject to fluctuation there is a great need to provide
education and training towards self employment and job creation through cottage and
service industries and small business enterprises. Hence the emphasis on education, on the
secondment of teachers and on training for ultimate job creation in micro enterprises,
small businesses, manufacturing and service industry, to serve the region rather than to
be dependant purely on tourism and agriculture.
