A clinic for R100 000 in
Franschhoek South is being donated together with a Community Health Centre to cater for 20
000 people, which will be erected in Groendal (Franschhoek North). The actual building
will cost over R500 000 and the equipment R150 000. It is expected to be operational
during 1999. A commitment has been received from the Regional Health Authorities to staff
and man this facility.
It should be noted that the Franschhoek / Paarl Valley has the highest TB rate in the
world, sixty times that of the USA and forty times that of Eastern Europe. This is why
these medical facilities are so critical and donations from Belgium for them are expected
in the beginning of 1999.
