Radio Play

Welcome to SFSA's newest national competition!

We invite you to submit an entry (maximum 500 words and able to be easily performed within 3 minutes - complete with sound effects) by 31 January 2008.

This is an entirely different medium - unlike stage or television, offering only sound to work with - yet in many ways peculiarly suited to science fiction.

"Television never does science fiction very well because it can't afford the production values. With radio you really do have a theatre as large as the universe"

- Mike Walker (award winning radio dramatist, cited on BBC World Service website)

"The diversity of plays that the BBC World Service puts out is a good pointer towards why one might think of radio as a good first port of call for an idea"

- Marcy Kahan (ditto, also cited on BBC World Service website)

"There are no limits - A radio play can move through any dimension of time [or] to any location -the ability of the radio dramatist to create a unique world in the listener's imagination is a special quality generally denied to TV viewers or theatregoers -the listener can be instantly transported inside the head of a character and can hear thoughts"

- IRDP website
