Rol Cortishane believes he has found a home, on the sea and in the hidden
pirate city of Ganesh Ka, but when Cankor, onetime beggar king, arrives at
the city, Rol is frced to leave and go to the aid of his sister, Rowen. She
is fighting for the kingdom that is rightfully hers, but the war is not going
well. Between Rol and Rowen, and Cankor they devise a plan to trap and then
destroy the usurper, but things do not go as planned.
Excellent narrative and descriptive writing make this a book to enjoy.
Kearney has the ability to write gripping and enthralling descriptions of
battles, both at sea and on land, and the characters who take part are well
drawn out. This, to me, is far superior to Book One,
The Mark of Ran, but it is not Fantasy. Although Rol is not all human
and has a magic sword, this is book of sea and land battles in the fictional
days of Hornblower, and nothing more.
