Drenai Tales Volume 3
David Gemmell
Random House
R210
Reviewed by Ian Jamieson, 2003

Three separate tales published together in one book: The Legend of Deathwalker(1996); Winter Warriors (1997); and Hero in the Shadows(2002).

944 pages of action fantasy by one of its most popular authors.

Druss the Legend takes on the countless warriors of the Nadir as he joins the Gothir army at Dros Delnoch in a bid to halt the terrifying hordes of barbarian warriors.

Three old Drenai warriors battle the forces of evil when a dark magician from the shadow lands seeks to kill the unborn king carried by a pregnant queen. Two kings are dead, and, when the third dies, then all the forces held beyond the shadow lands will be unleashed on humanity.

Waylander, the deadliest of all assassins, is getting old, and his skills are not as sharp as they once were. He is thrown into battle against ancient sorceries, and must kill a man who cannot die. It is unfortunate that the twist in the tale makes this saga completely impossible.

Gemmell's books make compelling and enjoyable, if very light reading. His heroes and heroines have skills and talents way beyond normal mortals, and usually in the killing arts. It is just a pity that none of the stories are new, (I had previously read two of them) as it makes the price a little bit unattractive.
