Namaqualand is truly a land of contrasts. For the major part of each year this seemingly arid expanse of sunbaked, sandy plains and granite mountains, hides a wondrous secret.
With the first rains in early winter, those dry lands are transformed into a kaleidoscope of brilliant colours in spring. Daisies, Mesembryanthemums, perennial herbs, aloes, lilies and a host of other species create a tapestry of indigenous spring flowers which are unparalleled anywhere.
About 4000 species of plants grow here. This flora belongs to a category dealing with tropical flora of the ancient world known as the Palaeotropical Kingdom, and should not be confused with the so-called Cape Flora, which is one of the six floral Kingdoms found world-wide.
Climate, plant geography, geology, and general topography have combined over millennia to provide us with the propagation and distribution of this unique floral display.
