Eastern
medical theory describes health as a dynamic balance of body,
mind and spirit. Each part is inseparable from the functioning
of the whole organism in its environment. A Shiatsu therapist
treats the whole body and specific problem areas by addressing
both the physical and emotional well being of the client.
Shiatsu therapists aim to normalise the
flow of "Ki" (energy) in the body by applying pressure
to obstructed or weak areas. The Japanese word Shiatsu means
finger pressure, although practitioners also use their palms,
forearms and knees. Physically this has the effect of stimulating
the circulation and the flow of Lymphatic fluid through the body.
This helps to release toxins and deep-seated tension from the
muscles to improve the patient's strength and vitality. It is
rejuvenating, relaxing and an excellent form of preventive health-care
against common winter ailments.
From a Western medical perspective the
deep relaxation achieved is due to Shiatsu's effect on the central
nervous system. Shiatsu pressure starts the healing, conserving
functions of the parasympathetic branch of the nervous system.
This reduces the body's overactive fight or flight responses
(a classic response of stress or anxiety) - giving the body space
and time to heal itself.
The person receiving Shiatsu will feel
more grounded, calmer, peaceful and energized. Clients say they
choose Shiatsu because, "It gets to the root of the problem.
Relieves stiff muscles, and re-centers them." The "response-ability"
of the shiatsu practitioner is to allow the clients body to rebalance
itself toward its own natural flow and well-being.
Shiatsu is practiced on a mat on the floor
with the client wearing loose, comfortable clothing. The session
will last one hour and may also include diet and lifestyle recommendations
tailored to the client. Excellent results will be obtained from
one treatment session but I generally recommend a set of three
treatments for a more sustained transformation.
Shiatsu can be used:
to aid relaxation and revitalisation
in general health maintenance and awareness
to promote self development and self healing
for the treatment of specific conditions
complementary to other alternative and orthodox treatments
