The painter Brian Wiles created a series of ten paintings reflecting man’s journey towards connecting the conscious with the unconscious.

He was commissioned by the Divine Intelligence to produce a series of paintings reflecting the phases of man’s search for meaning and his individual Divine Purpose. Over a period of four and a half years he transferred his visions onto canvas by producing ten very exceptional paintings.

These original paintings have been donated by Brian’s widow, Lucy Wiles, to the Association of Creative Thought in Port Elizabeth where they are on permanent exhibition.

The artist explained that the title “Out of the Vortex” is to illustrate man’s dilemma of standing outside the whirlpool of life and his search to get into the light and not the other way around as would be the first impression.

The vortex is created by the two states in which man finds himself – in the system of duality:

• Man’s creation from evolutionary genetic principles, and

• The purely abstract symbols created by the mind.

The whole process can also be seen as the creation of a self-portrait by the individual; finding himself and his true purpose as designed by Divine Intelligence.

This powerful message was channeled through the artist to be shared by individuals to draw understanding from these symbols. The interpretation of the meaning of these paintings is that of the author alone. It is open to flexibility, and serves only as guidelines to simplify the individual process.

1. THE EMERGENCE OF THE SOUL-IMAGE:
The soul of man emerging from the Soul of the Cosmos and as it emerges it takes on form but is so distinctly part of the Universal background from which it has emerged, everything blends with its Source and so there is no feeling of separation between the figure emerging and the vortex from which it has come. Notice how the figure becomes one with every aspect. It is significant that in this picture the light is behind the emerging figure.

2. INTEGRATION WITH THE SOUL IMAGE:
The perfect illustration of One Mind. The mind of man being completely one with the Mind of the Universe. The whole being of the individual is receiving from, and being One with, the Cosmos. Again the form is neither male nor female.

3. THE COMING OF THE SPIRIT:
Man moving through physical and mental stages into a spiritual realization. As he does this so much of the past beliefs and solid low vibrations of matter are transformed. This is the same face at three stages of understanding.

4. RE-INTEGRATION
Here man finds himself alone on the periphery, aware of the vortex from which he has come but unaware of how to become “centred”. Around him are all the race beliefs and confusions.

5. DARK HERITAGE:
Here is poor little man living in a fish-bowl experience, endeavouring to keep his light burning. He is bogged down by the dark heritage of the past – past lives, past guilts, fears, resentments and, of course, dogmatic beliefs. The subconscious mind, in spite of the dross with which it is filled, is still, through the light of the Christ Consciousness, maintaining its individual link with the Universal.

6. VIRGIN BIRTH
Rebirth into the understanding of the centre. Man being born again into knowing who he is, realizes the truth that he has access to all the facets of the diamond. He can advance into any one of these facets as they are all individual pathways of light for him.

7. DAWN:
Note the instruments of light being superimposed on each other – the Sun and the Moon.
Man beginning to understand. Yet still beset by past fears and beliefs, which although now not as close, keep crowding in, presenting eerie shadows.

8. TURNING POINT:
The atmosphere of peace created by this painting is significant of the inner peace which comes with the understanding of the Crucifixion. The releasing of beliefs in death and the fall of man and the flowering after the understanding of the meaning of the Trinity to the individual.

9. PURIFICATION:
After the turning point there is a period of purification of the soul through contemplation. The lotus is the symbol of the soul’s unfoldment. Shadows of the past and belief in past dogmas and creeds bind us by heavy chains which can be seen in the misty background of this picture. One is always aware of the centre as each petal unfolds.

10. PROMISE:
The artist found himself, after four–and –a half years, back on the same beach as he found himself in picture number one. The promise portrayed in this picture strikes deep into one’s soul. A feeling of complete unity with the whole and a deep understanding of the amazing energy force of which we are a part as the light shines through and brings us into the realization of who we are, and of our Divine Purpose.
