City Cycling Club Newsletter :  September/October 2000

We have decided to shelve plans to go to the 94.7 road race in Johannesburg as we feel that to squeeze it in between the Burger Sanlam and the very popular Double Century would be asking too much of our bodies , one must remember that the Gautengers reckon the 94.7 is the toughest of all funrides. Maybe we can count on the morons to perform the same as last year and cause the Double Century to be banned which would result in a gap in the funride calendar.

Additional funrides

Please make a note of the following funrides that have been added to the calendar :

Sunday 19 November at False Bay Rugby Club (74km) this is in aid of development of cycling in the province and has been sponsored by Engen

Saturday 02 December at the Muldersvlei Market (80km) the WPCA will be organising this one , no officials will be required so it should go more smoothly than the WP champs. Whatever profits are realised from both these funrides will be ploughed back into cycling and not into some well-deserving charity. So support them , please.

Track fixtures

For those of us that are losing it in the sprint there are track bikes available at the Velodrome , so if you want to experience a bit of an adrenaline rush you don’t have to go to Ratanga Junction. There are training nights at the Velodrome for beginners and all are welcome , for more information and advice give our track captain a buzz on 903 9580 (h)

Bellville track league is held every Tuesday at the Velodrome 19hr30 start.

For those interested in money get along to Paarl for Rhadsports league , they have guaranteed prize money of R10 000.

4th November - Paarl - Rhadsport track league 1400hrs

9-11th November - Velodrome - International

18 November - Paarl - Rhadsport track league 1400hrs

25 November - Paarl track Yorkshire 1400hrs

09 December - Paarl - Rhadsport track league 1400hrs

24 December - Paarl Boxing Day 1400hrs

30 December - Paarl - Yorkshire . This will be preceded by a kermesse for the roadies in Paarl starting at 10am .

Western Province Track Champs - 29/30/31 March 2001 , take note that these are provisional dates only , as we first have to grovel for the Velodrome.

SA Champs are supposed to be in Port Elizabeth next year but it seems as if something else has cropped up as the SACF are only going to decide on the venue at the Congress in November (hold thumbs for the Velodrome)

World Champs

The club managed to assist Willie Newman and Tony Roberts with a small sponsorship towards their trips overseas and although both did not bring any metal home they enjoyed the experience immensely. Can you believe that there were over 150+ competitors in the 60-63 age category and that the average speed for the t/t in the 70+ category was 40kph for all three medallists. Willie managed a fifth place in the match sprint and managed to remain competitive in the points and t/t rides . Imagine what we could do with a few club sponsors .

E-mail

Posting over ninety newsletters out a month is becoming a logistical nightmare - so in order to cut down on postage and stationery and the need to get up to date info to you more frequently we request that all members who have access to electronic mail to forward your addresses to the following committee members as soon as possible , -Willie Newman (newmax@intekom.co.za) , Graham Ward (grahamward@mweb.co.za) the rest of the members will be sent newsletter in the more conventional manner.

SA Road Champs - 2001

Kimberley is the venue , if you are on a training programme take note that the champs will be held in August (3rd to 5th) and not early in the season as in previous years.

Sweat shirts

Here’s your chance to buy a bit of history , in our centenary year the club had sweatshirts made as a memento and believe it or not there are a limited number left at the bargain price of R20 , they are ideal for those chilly mornings before funrides. The sweatshirts are in club colours with the club badge and are available in small and medium . Money collected will be put towards a travel fund for members going to SA Champs.

Peninsula CC

On the first Tuesday of the month they hold a time trial (14.8km) on the Spaansemacht Road , Constantia starting at 16hr30 onwards , entries are taken on the line and the cost to our members is R5.00

On the third Tuesday of the month they hold a hill climb (2.4km) same time , same cost , for more info phone the sadistic Francois Ashton 083 2525 824.

In the last newsletter we made mention of an inter-provincial where each club would contribute R500 towards prize money , well the meets won’t take place this year as the venue has been fully booked up to early next year for pop concerts , church services , flea markets , you name it........everything other than a cycle race takes place at the Velodrome. So , the club has put forward a proposal that the WPCA start correspondence with the various Departments of Sport and NOCSA regarding the availability of the venue and the difficulty the Association has with developing the sport without having access to a venue.

We also proposed that the Association appoint a coach for track cycling who will be available to coach youngsters and be responsible for the bikes , so if you know of any old trackies who have a bit of spare time to coach once or twice a week let the club know.

A provisional calendar has been drawn up for the 2001 road season and the WP races should be included in the SACF national calendar.

Training rides

Gerard Genis has organised training rides from his shop in Table View every Tuesday and Thursday starting at 17hrs30 , the ride distance is about 40k’s and the bunch are home at about 19hrs00 depending on the strength of the south-Easter. Wednesdays are reserved for the ladies , Gerard dispenses with training tips on the rides and John Simpson normally backs him up incase of punctures etc etc

Amalgamation

An open request to Ride magazine , let us hear the other side of the story in the next edition.

Killarney will begin on the 25th October 2000 , 17hrs00 for the lighties and 18hrs00 for the hardebaarde.

For those members that have paid for cycling jerseys and have yet to receive them please give any one of the above members a call so that we can arrange to get one to you.

I know this sounds a bit Irish , but if you aren’t getting a newsletter , let us know and we’ll add you to our mailing list.
