Cruel winter weather was the order of the day, for the last of the Winter league series, being the W P Road Championships, held over the grueling Paardeberg circuit, off the R44 to Wellington.
A good turnout of cyclists braved the elements, with the youngsters and senior Vets getting the brunt of  the heavy  rain, and the seniors/u23’s and Junior Vets getting the better weather in the afternoon.

Unbeaten Raynold Smith withdrew early in the U16 race , to give Bellvilles Stefan Lombard the Title.
Top Elite cyclist Moolman Welgemoed, (Bellville) and in form Geddon Ruddick made a early break (you snooze you lose ) on the 2nd of 5 laps, and were never threatened by the bunch, going  to the line in a cat and mouse situation (for the last 2 kms),with Welgemoed taking the ever so close sprint.  Philip Schoemans of Queens taking Bronze.
The young talented Ryder BOE team bagged all three medals in the U23 category, with Michael Ellis taking honours from Isaak Hannekom and Craig Butland.
The Junior race saw a few breaks, but the decisive move coming on the 3rd lap, when team mates from Tygerberg, Chris Esch and Lourens Calitz getting away, leaving CVT Team mates Travis Allen and Wynand Oosthuizen to fight it out for bronze, with Oosthuizen getting the medal. The demanding circuit saw only 5 juniors finish.
Again, as in the Time Trail, the City Club vets cleaned up, as did the Vet Ladies, bagging 11 of the 18 available medals. Our short term goal is to win 18/18 in the vets and make an impression in the seniors and schools categories. That wraps up the road season for this year , now for the track , but more about that in the next newsletter. Party time.

The result of numerous meetings between Cycle Lab and City culminated in the birth of City Cyclelab Cycle Club at a function held at the Sports Café , Waterfront , the occasion also heralded the introduction of our sponsors , Computor Sciences Corporation for the club and Senior team and Control Valve Technology for the Junior team. Christian Stewart was the guest MC , speeches were kept to a minimum and the highlight of the night was the video clip of Jalabert winning a stage in the T’d Switzerland and then some of the members showing off the kit , welcome to all the new members who took advantage of the special and joined up. It was also nice to see so many members attend this giant step forward for the club , while we were attempting to contact all our life members we found out that Lanco Davies has relocated to Malta , Allan Miller was unable to attend as he had booked to do a tour of the West Coast and David George was busy racing overseas.

Training

The Senior/junior teams have a long ride on the weekend should there be no Super/funrides taking place ,
All members of the club are welcome to attend , give Mark Wilcox a call on 0837037570 , club colours must be worn.

Gerard Genis has training rides at Killarney on a Monday and Tuesday evenings as well as a Wednesday avie ride (tel: 557 4660) Give him a call for more details.

The Wednesday evening Killarney sessions are scheduled to start in the middle of October (17th) , these sessions are hard , fast and windy , the fireworks might also spill over from the weekends superleague , so be careful out there.

The club , City Cyclelab , have a ride with back-up vehicles every Saturday from Cycle Lab in Sea Point with a 7.00am start.

Club Racing Kit – R200

The club has recently spent thousands of Rands having new club kit manufactured in our sponsors logo and colours , the kit consists of bib shorts and a racing jersey. The retail price for a good quality set of clothes will set you back at least ±R400 , so members are getting a good deal.

Members who paid for "old" club jerseys but did not receive them will unfortunately have to pay the balance between what they paid originally and the new price , remember you are also getting bib shorts.

We also take this opportunity to request that you wear your club colours to super league and funrides and come and join other members at the "club after race camp" , look for the red tent.

Vets to take on the World

John & Janet Moss and Willie Newman are currently hard at work on the track preparing for the Veterans Track Champs in Manchester , UK . Janet is a former world champ in her age category , John and Willie have come close ,to getting in the medals in the points and sprint races respectively. Good luck
