RACE REPORT

Cruel winter weather was the order of the day, for the last of the Winter league series, being the W P Road Championships, held over the gruelling Paardeberg circuit, off the R44 to Wellington.

A good turnout of cyclists braved the elements, with the youngsters getting the brunt of the heavy rain, and the olddies getting the better weather in the afternoon.

Unbeaten Raynold Smith withdrew early in the U16 race , to give Bellvilles Stefan Lombard the Title, and Mavericks Jaco Venter destroying the U14 field by many minutes. Heinnie Van Der Merwe (u12)and Johan Van Zyl (u10), having an excellent ride in the worst conditions.

Top Elite cyclist Moolman Welgemoed, (Bellville) and in form Geddon Ruddick made a early break on the 2nd of 5 laps, and were never threatened by the bunch, going to the line in a cat and mouse situation (for the last 2 kms), with Welgemoed taking the ever so close sprint. Philip Schoemans of Queens taking Bronze.

The young talented Ryder BOE team bagged all three medals in the U23 category, with Michael Ellis taking honours from Isaak Hannekom and Craig Butland.

The Junior race saw a few breaks, but the decisive move coming on the 3rd lap, when team mates from Tygerberg, Chris Esch and Lourens Calitz getting away, leaving CVT Team mates Travis Allen and Wynand Oosthuizen to fight it out for bronze, with Oosthuizen getting the medal. The demanding circuit saw only 5 juniors finish.

Again, as in the Time Trail, the City Club vets cleaned up, as did the Vet Ladies, bagging 11 of the 18 available medals.

second lap, with City cyclist Mark Wilcox going for the big one, but also

getting caught in the last lap for home. A group of 12 sprinted for the

line, with Willie Van Zyl (City) taking honours from Caltex rider Graham

Hector and Rhadsports Garth Thomas. A nasty crash in the sprint could have

turned nasty, however only two riders came down. Both uninjured.

Junior Vets in an early break by Micheal David from CVT and Juan Mostert

(Ocean Wheelers) finishing 1st and 2nd and David's teammate Wynand

Oosthuizen in third.

an unbeaten recorded for Raynold Smith, CVT in the U16 section.

The final decider came with 11 kms to go, when Caltex rider Geddon Rudick turned on the pace, and took with him Cole, Calitz and CVT rider Tommy Strachan, making it 2 Elites and Two Juniors, which saw a very exciting sprint, with Cole pipping Calitz to the line, followed by Ruddick and then Strachan.  RACE REPORT;

A taxing 9.8km circuit proved too much for many of the cyclists in Saturdays event, hosted by Elfin Cycling Club, which started and finished outside the Helderberg Winery, in the Somerset area. In near perfect weather a large group of Elites set out, to cover 8 laps of this circuit, closely persued by the ever growing group of juniors, however, each lap saw more casulities pulling out, mainly due to the high pace set by the leaders.   Leonado Van Onselen, and youngster Wesley Cole (19), team members from Peninsula Club, got some great team work going, which saw them away for 4 laps, however a fine chase from City rider Mark Wilcox saw the bunch back together for the last three laps, which resulted in a sprint finish, with Van Onselen taking his second victory in as many races, with Cole returning to form, hot on his heals. Mark Wilcox taking third.

The Junior race also contested over 8 laps, saw a break come in the second lap, with four riders away, Chris Willemse and Lourens Calitz (Shauff), Wynand Oosthuizen and Travis Allen (CVT), which made for good team work from both sides, Oosthuizen bailed on the 4th lap, leaving the three away for the remaining 5 laps, Allen had his work cut out against these two team mates, and the constant cat and mouse game built them a comfortable lead, by 5 minutes. The sprint added excitement to the day with great support for these youngsters coming from the spectators. The nail biting sprint saw Willemse taking the honours, followed by Allen and Carlitz.

The ladies section was won by Martle Vosloo, with legend Gerrit Genis taking the Senior Vets sprint, and Tim Carter clearly the winner in the Junior Vets.
