This time we are going to be like "tour " and Ride two issues in one , so this newsletter is for Oct/Nov. The end of the road season has been reached with the last two races in the Paarl area. Was the points system a success ? if all finishers were allocated points as originally proposed there would have been more incentive to compete in races up to the end of the season. The points system was proposed by Mike Genard of the Schools Assoc. Should you have a more equitable system or if you want to panelbeat the excisting one let us know. Next year the Road season will start in the middle of April in amongst the funrides and the WP champs will be the last race of the season and that will be ridden in the last week of August.
At the September WP meeting there was a complaint that cyclists did not support the TT champs as well the road race champs were supported the previous weekend. Worcester Cycling Club presented their credentials to the WP EXCO and have been put on a six month probationary period , note that they are not the same club as Worcester Wheelers. Maverick Cycling Club from Somerset West also applied for membership but were not accepted .
Unification is still an ongoing process for more updated info read Tour and/or Ride cycling magazines. The latest developments have Raoul de Villiers getting his backside into gear and looking for sponsors to fund the development of cycling and Lawrence Whittikar stepping down as chairman of the PPA.
Funny Funrides
The first few funrides have really been fun with last minute route changes causing a bit of chaos amongst the riders , the PPA should have tried to sell us radars instead of timing chips. The Bellville North Super League was stopped by the traffic police , they had some bad language and rude signs directed at them by our fellow cyclists. Why do some of the mobile marshalls have to show their ignorance , in one instance we had a two ton tessa shouting from the other side of the road that all cyclist must keep to the left ,this was directed at a bunch riding into a strong S/easter up Bottelary road , the bunch was just big enough to stretch in single file from the extreme left to the centre line. +
License 2000
All members should have received license renewal by now ,if you havent please give us a shout , we need to get your forms in as soon as possible as the more registered members we have as at the 1st February the more votes we have at WP monthly meetings - 10 licenses gets you one vote . Included with this newsletter are the membership renewal forms , we have had to increase the annual subs by R5.00 .
What club will Ryder/Boe manne attach themselves to?
World Vets Track Champs
Janet Moss came away with 2 bronze medals at the recently held champs in Manchester , Jason Peisl just missed out by ending fourth in the 3000m individual pursuit. John Moss also participated but was unable to produce his SA champs form in the points race.
Track League
Track league has begun at the Paarl track every Thursday night(will be at Bellville Velodrome on 18 November & 23 December) Why dont you pop along to the track and watch long time member John simpson make his comeback on the track , he has even withdrawn from the U-Store-It double century team in order to concentrate on the shorter distances.
Paarl Boxing Day will be held on the 27th December . In 1997 Jamie Ball was the first City rider to win the 25 miler since 1958 , a year later he tried to emulate City riders Dave Rees and Ted Clayton in the 1890s and 1930s respectively to win the event in consectutive years but was beaten by clubmate James Perry .
Congrats to Oscar Ferreira , John Moss , Chris Jonker ,Jaime Pombo and Tony Roberts for ending in the top ten in the Vets and womens Winter league , Oscar reckons he would have won it if he hadnt crocked his back . Nicky Andrews won the womens section with ease.
More on Katie Krall
We managed to obtain footage of Katies race on video and Steve Down has had it copied and sent to the States.
Ex-Member Jamie Ball took up an invitation to race for a club in Clermont-Ferand , France and by all accounts performed admirably. He missed out on being upgraded to a category which would have placed him in the top 400 riders in France(inclusive of all professionals) he certainly has something to aim for next year .Another local Tiaan Kannemeyer , after finishing tenth in the commonwealth Classic in Os has just signed for Cologne Cycling in Germany and will ride for them in the Rapport Tour , that not bad for someone who was forbidden by his father to ride in the mother of all funrides -the Argus- because it was too dangerous.
The club extends its condolences to Peter Haupt and his family on the passing away of his father.
Drugs & Jean-Pierre van Zyl
SACF and NOCSAs big hope to win a medal on the track at Sydney 2000 was busted in the US of A for using anabolic steriods.Thats over R200 000 that the SACF can kiss goodbye. As Sylvia Dale remarked in the last SACF newsletter dont ask Nocsa for financial help if youre not on the "world scoreboard". JP got onto the wrong scoreboard !!!
Vets & Womens 2 Day
This event held in sweltering conditions on the Saturday and windy conditions on the Sunday was won by ocean Wheelers Johan Doep du Plessis.
Double Century
A lot of us will be riding for the U Store It teams , some of us are hoping and (some of us are praying) for misty windless conditions on the day. Good luck and enjoy. This is what Bernard Hinault said about feuling your body "When I first started racing , a bottle would last me 150ks. but now , for a 300k race in moderate weather , I need 10 to 12 bottles including nutritional drinks. Normally , a rider should lose hardly any weight during a stage , and that means drinking a lot. Wise words from a five time winner of the Tour.
Special General Meeting
The proposal to be put forward at this meeting will have far reaching implications for your club , so make a special effort to be there .
