CITY CYCLING OCTOBER NEWSLETTER

 CITY KEEP ON WINNING . . .

 SEVENTH WORLD TITLE FOR JANET

At the recent World Masters Track Championships held at the Manchester Velodrome, UK, City’s Janet Moss (representing South Africa) won the match sprint and 500 m time trial titles. Her time in the 200 m sprint was an event record. This brings her total of World Masters Track titles to an amazing 7!

In an exciting race, City’s John Moss also representing South Africa, came second in the 60 lap points race which was decided only on the last lap where four points separated the top five riders. Breaking away after 25 laps John dropped his breakaway companions and stayed away for 30 laps on his own and was within 20 metres of lapping the field which would have given him victory. He missed the gold by one point!

Team South Africa finished fourth behind USA, Britain and Australia. More than 350 riders from 23 nations competed in the week long world masters track championships. The small team of eight riders also claimed the highest aggregate of medals per rider with 15 medals in all, 5 Gold, 2  Silver and 8 Bronze medals to their credit. Despite the event being a fully fledged official UCI backed World Masters Track Championships our one and only South African cycling programme Supersport/Supercycling choose to ignore their achievements – and not a mention has been allowed the sully the screens!

TOUR DE WORCESTER

City made a great start in the first event of PPA Spring series at the Tour of Worcester.  Our riders won four of the events. In the Elite race Wesley Cole was first over the line with team mates Jayson Berry and Simon Brown 7th and 8th respectively. The women’s race was won by City’s evergreen Cathy Carstens other City riders who featured in the top ten were Sue Manners-Wood 4th, Jan Brown 6th and Niki Andrews 7th. In senior scholars race City’s Jonathan Esch was the victor. Whilst in the masters event City’s Henk Smit took the honours.

VETS AND MASTERS PPA 3-DAY TOUR

Riders experienced all types of weather over the three days. Gale force winds on the first day, lightening, thunder and rain on the second day and warm conditions on the final stage. Racing was hard and was dominated to a large extent by riders from up north.

In the Masters Race Johan Spies won on a count back as he shared the fastest overall time with Noel Zady, in fact only 10 seconds separated the first five finishers. Francois du Toit was desperately unlucky to finish third four seconds off the pace as he ‘missed the gate’ in the sprint for the final stage and had to make a u-turn which cost him time. Three City members did well to finish in the top 20 - Henk Smit 9th, Bert Correia 11th and Ian Gordon 16th.

Jurie Krige from Gauteng  won the vets race, followed by Brian Ireland and Colin Germs.

UNDER 16s TOUR

Our under 16s survived a hard tour and came back fitter and more experienced from this extremely demanding race.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS

Tour De Vino at Boschendal – this coming Sunday 10 October.

This is a new event on the fun ride calendar and the first time in my memory that we will be using the Boaschendal Wine Estate to start a ride. The long ride of 92 kms will cover some familiar roads and with Helshoogte being the last climb I’m sure most of us will be taking it easy.Refresments will be available to club members at the club kombi and gazebo. Rumour has it that TV cameras will be there, so no posing in some exotic European pro kit - ware your club colours.

Junior Vets and Womens 3 day – Muldersvlei Market.

These will be separate races. Judging by the quality of racing amongst the vets in the recent Tour de Eden, the local edition promises to be fast and furious. If you are not taking part why not take a ride up to the summit of Helshoogte on the Sunday morning and cheer on the Vets and Women as they summit the climb. Members taking part in the Women’s tour must please contact Janine Brown on 976 3633.

Here are the rest of the events taking place up to the end of December.

Track – training and racing in October

There are plenty of opportunities to train on the track during October. Should you wish to give track a try give Jerome Hendricks 633 8876 or 082 495 8513 or Duncan McIntyre on 072 298 0648 as these dates are liable to change at short notice.

There are track bikes available during training sessions at the velodrome but you will need to take your own helmet and pedals.

If you have your own track bike licensed riders may train at the track on any day provided they show their license to security. Please phone the velodrome to ensure that the venue is available on 949 7450 and ask for Elsabeth.

KILLARNEY TRAINING

Every Tuesday at 5.00 pm Gerard Genis of Astra Pro Cycles hosts training sessions under controlled conditions. There are various groups ranging from the complete novices to “complete cyclists”. My advice is to ride with Gerard’s group. Training consists of laps of the track with a short interval on each lap. For the more adventurous there is a group of maniacs who ride as hard as possible for about an hour, so if you have yet to see your heart rate at 110% of max, ride with them.

KILLARNEY RACING

Every Wednesday at 6.00pm from 13 October racing takes place in handicapped groups with the slowest going off first. Racing is hard, especially when the “south easter” is blowing.
