Unification at long last

Most of us involved in cycling would never have believed that we would experience the birth of Cycling SA. Whilst nobody can explain the whole mechanics of the unified body we do know that the post of the CEO will be filled in the new year and that the offices of the new body, CSA, will be in Cape Town.

 SACF Licenses

An important aspect of the unification is that as from the 1st of January 2005, all participants in the PPA Leagues races will need to be in possession of a CSA license.

There are two categories of CSA licence:

UCI CSA licence (full licence):  entitles the holder to take part in any race under the auspices of CSA (the old SACF). This includes PPA league events; WPCA league events; provincial championships; national championships; national classics such as the Tour of Eden; U16s Tour; Junior Tour; etc.

The cost for Elite and Veterans is R100 plus R50 per discipline; Juniors R90 plus R40 per discipline; Schools R60 plus R30 per discipline. The disciplines are: road, track, MTB, BMX.

Example: If you are an Elite and want a licence for road only it is R100 plus R50 = R150; if you want to ride road, track and MTB it is R100 plus R50 + R50 + R50 = R250.

This licence can be exchanged, for a fee, for an international licence which will allow you to compete overseas in UCI events.

Cyclo Sport: entitles the holder to take part in PPA league races and WPCA league races in the winter. The holder may not take part in provincial championships, national championships; national classics like the Tour of Eden; Junior Tour; U16s Tour etc. This licence will not be valid overseas. The cost of this licence is R50 plus R15 per discipline.

Current SACF licenses are valid until 31 January 2005 - but we do suggest that you renew your license as soon as possible with the club. The SA Road Champs take place early in March 2005 and entries normally close by the middle of January and you will need a 2005 licence to enter. Give John Moss a call on 422 5020 or contact him by e-mail john.moss@absamail.co.za should you require any additional information. Please don’t phone the offices of the SACF as all enquires must go through your club.

Please note even though you have a licence you will need to satisfy the PPA’s criteria to take part in the elite, veterans and women’s league. Junior and Senior Schools league do not need any qualifying criteria other than your age and a licence.

A positive spin-off from license issue is that it might encourage more cyclists to take part in the WPCA inter club races which are held throughout winter. It’s no co-incidence that riders who have won consistently in the PPA leagues also take part in the “Winter League’.

Club Prize Giving

All members are invited to attend the club prize giving where we will honour our members who have excelled during this year. All members who have been awarded national or provincial colours, or have been placed in the first three in national or provincial championship are requested to contact John Moss. It is also vitally important that members wishing to take part in the U16 and Junior tours also attend. Please note that this occasion will be open to all members and friends. A date and venue will be announced later on in the month.

 Killarney training sessions

Both the Genis (Tuesday) and Di Roberts (Wednesday) Killarney sessions are proving popular. We have found that the Tuesday session is a good leg loosener after a hard weekend whereas the Wednesday session is for the ‘hardcore’.

Genis’s training sessions attract a wide variety of riders and the group can be sometimes too big with the speed at recovery pace of 30 kms max for the first 45 minutes, the last 15 minutes is taken up with 30 – 40 second intervals.

On a Wednesday, racing is in handicapped groups with the slowest going off first. Compared to a few years ago, groups are now much smaller, but the racing is still just as tough.

Helmets – a true story

During the Vets tour a cyclist, who was watching his brother take part, happened to ride past a marshalling point without a helmet on his head. The marshall reminded him that it was now law that a helmet had to be worn when cycling. The marshall got told “to go where no-one wants to go”. Unluckily for the cyclist there were traffic police manning that point as well and fined the cyclist. Believe it or not, the cyclist gave a false name.

Club Gazebo

Refreshments are available to club members at the CSC gazebo (if available) or at the club kombi compliments of City Cycling Club after PPA rides. Members are also welcome to bring along their fold up chairs for additional comfort. Beers will be available should there be a demand.

On his way to Os

Luthando Khaka (City) will be representing South Africa at the Commonwealth Youth Games that will take place at the end of November. He will be teaming up with Jaun van Heerden and John-Lee Augustyn in the road race. Other Western Province riders selected are Reniel Mathyssen (Paarl) on the track and Jeanine Binneman (Bellville) on the road.
