Hello to all City Cycling Club members and a very big welcome to all of you who have recently joined City. This is a quick update of the club's activities since the last newsletter. This newsletter also covers a broad range of interests and activities of your Club.

WPCA Winter League

This season a committee has been formed to organize winter racing. It is important that all clubs in the Western Province commit themselves to this new format of racing. Each club has to contribute R750 to cover expenses and also has to supply two marshals. We are aware that marshalling is not the most stimulating activity to take part in and we don’t want to call on the same members week after week. Please, if at all possible, make yourselves available to the club. Make it easy for us and phone the club before the club phones you.

The first race gets under way on 8 May at Bottelary Wine Cellar, Bottelary Road. This road race is on an out and back route to Paarl taking in the Agter-Paarl/Malmsbury Road.

On 15 May the first time trial takes place around the undulating 26 km Phesantekraal circuit.  The start and finish will be outside the entrance to the airfield. It’s just you and the clock.

The second road race of the series takes place near Paarl on 22 May. Details of the circuit are still to be confirmed.

On the 29 May the first of the Carboxtax Criterium series takes place outside the premises of Control Value Technology in Killarney Gardens. This spectator friendly form of racing is very popular in Europe as fans can see the riders many times as they lap the short circuit. Come out and support your club.

The third road race takes place on 5 June on the Paardeberg circuit near Paarl. The start and finish is at the Boland Agricultural School, Paardeberg Road.

The first hill climb/street mile takes place on 12 June in Somerset West, details are not yet known but we hope to inform you in the next newsletter.

The Western Province Road Champs takes place on the 26 June, the venue is still to be announced.

Western Province Track Champs

City had a very successful track championships which were held at the Bellville Velodrome. City won the Holman Floating Trophy for the most successful club. The club's senior riders were dominant and they won seven out of eight events. Women’s track cycling is gradually coming out of the doldrums and City members took all the golds in this growing side of the sport. Janet Moss took the gold in 500 m TT; match sprint and the 1500 m, whilst Jan Brown grabbed the gold in the 2000 m pursuit. The highlight in the Veterans Category was John Moss breaking his own national record for the 3000 metres pursuit. On a sadder note, Andrew Mearns fell and broke his collar bone when a participant walked across the track during warm up.

City Track Meeting

We desperately wanted to hold this auspicious event on Saturday afternoon, but the manangement of the Velodrome had hired the venue out on the following Tuesday to Enriquo Iglesias. With the risk of the stage and stands being erected on the Saturday for the pop concert the velodrome management brought our meeting forward to the Thursday evening. However, the evening proved a success with all categories being well contested. There were twelve entrants in the women’s section compared with nine entrants in the Sunday’s PPA league event! Hopefully this growth can be sustained.

The Tramway Shield

After the qualifying rounds the two fastest teams City CVT/CSC and Rhadsport met in the final for the first prize of R500. At the start Simon Brown of the CVT/CSC team had a mechanical failure. When the starter fired his gun to stop the race, instead of it going BANG it went fpsst - a dud cap - both teams hesitated and then CVT/CSC took up the racing with only two members. Rhadsport took advantage of having three riders and easily won the race. According to the officials and some other knowledgeable spectators CVT/CSC should have aborted as soon as they knew Simon had a mechanical failure and they would have earned a re-ride.

CVT Diamond Shield

CVT generously sponsored the last event of the evening with R5000 cash prizes. With R2000 for first place, prizes down to sixth and hotspots on laps 20 and 40 of the 60 lap race the racing was hard and fast. Reynold Smith and Simon Brown led the bunch into the last lap to take first and second places and Emile Steenkamp of City came in third to make it a City 1-2-3.

Thanks go to all our members and parents who helped make this meeting highly successful.

WPCA Snippets

Secretary/Treasurer of the WPCA for the last 19 years, Di Roberts, has decided to resign her position on the Exco Committee due to negative comments, sarcasm and "back biting" in the Province. UCT Cycling Club have applied to join the WPCA. Sub 3 have been conspicuous by their absence after they had expressed interest in becoming a club two meetings ago. It was agreed that clubs in the Province need more access to the Velodrome so that we can have more meetings leading up to WP and SA Champs. It was decided that the Province needs to book the facility well in advance for at least one track meeting a month. Track training and racing, hopefully, will continue through the winter months under the direction of Willie Newman.
