The racing season is upon us , when the nights are long and training hours short , and the racing is tough. There is a solution in sight for those of us that are unable to fit in training into our normal lives. Killarney Racing Circuit has been made available to use on a Tuesday and Thursday morning. The venue will be able to be used from 0630am at a cost of R5.00 a session , it would be prudent to attach a light on the front of your bike in order to see , there are floodlights available at the circuit but this would entail keys to be signed for and there would also be an extra cost involved. These sessions are open to all and sundry , so spread the word. For more information contact your Chairman John Simpson on 552 2970.

Boland a reality
Rhadsport , Yorkshire , Stellenbosch and Worcester have formed the Boland Cycling Union , Paarl have elected to stay in the Western Province. The Boland Union have also confirmed that there are non-affiliated clubs in Swellendam , Ashton , Bonnievale and Robertson that have expressed interest in becoming fully fledged members of the Boland.
For this year we will run the racing calender as in the past where all club are obliged to host a road race. Provincial Champs might be enlarged to include the Western Cape which might bring in the Southern Cape Cycling Association this needs to be worked on. At the last WP monthly meeting EPCA and South Cape invited the WP to send teams up to George on the 5th May to take part in a three way inter provincial , as you know our club race was on the 5th and the WP calender was already drawn up in November 2000. It looks as if EP & South Cape arrange racing dates off the cuff.
Criterium Cup
We had ten members contest this event on Sunday 20th April , on a 1,7km circuit in Paarden Eiland , Mark Wilcox won R100 for an hours work and is our Crit champ for the year , Robby Rodrigues romped in second with Darren Cronk third (first vet). Full marks to the other vets and women who had the guts to take on the top riders in the club.
Full results: Mark , Robby , Darren(1 lap down) , John Simpson (1 lap and a few metres down), Theo Schmeisser,Jan Binneman , Graham Ward,Craig Greeff,Nicky Andrews and Chad Henrickse(All a lap & a bit down)
Ronde van Paardeberg
Saturday was a day to cuddle up to a red (a bottle of ) instead of a red flag , going by the weather in the morning , however , by mid-morning the weather started clearing and the Cape reverted back to being Africa instead of resembling somewhere in gloomy Europe. We experienced a very good turnout of riders in all categories and we arranged that the Vets be split into under 40s and over 40s. Jans "boeries" lived up to all expectations , so much so , that he has been invited to run his boerewors stand at all the races. ( see msg from Chairman)
In the senior race our boys won the battles but Elfin won the war , Richard Rosselt and Ahmed Khatieb romping home to take 1st and 2nd respectively , Robby Rodrigues and Mark Wilcox finishing 1st and 3rd in the KOM. Michael Jones and Patrick Gaertner came in 1st and 2nd in the 30-39 years and Charl Le Roux and Charl Marais 2nd and 3rd in the 40+ age group.
Results in Argus
Racing times and venues will be published in the Friday edition of the Argus , results from the weekend racing will appear in Mondays Argus in the Results at a Glance column. We will also endeavour to have all positions on our web page by Tuesday, depending on the officials being able to record all finishers.
7th in the Tour d France.
We have received an e-mail from Cherie Pridham who was licensed with City up until last year and was racing in the UK as well as in Europe , she managed a 7th in womens version of the Tour , she also mentioned that the "ball & claw" is playing havoc with cycling , especially MTB in the UK.
SA Road Champs Kimberley
Lets start thinking about going as a club.
Venues Bellville/Elfin
Please take note of the change in the start venue for Bellville Cycling Clubs race , it is not the Durbanville Common , the start is at the 4 Way Stop , Fesantekraal
Helderberg Wines , between Stellenbosch and Somerset West is the venue for Elfins race , the route consists of a couple of laps over a 10k course. The other TBAs on the calender will be confirmed to you as soon as we know them.
IT equipment
Those that have visited our sight will have noted the lack of photographs . Is there anyone out there that could lend a scanner or digital camera to the club in order to load some action snapshots of members in action.
