City Cycling Club Newsletter :  May 2000

The 2000 road season has been blessed with fine weather so far which has resulted in excellent turnouts in all categories . Full results from all races so far this season will be published in the next newsletter .

Senior elite and juniors have been split and this will continue as long as the categories have ten or more participants , should organisers have an open race juniors will not be able to use open gears and there will be separate prize money . Take note that the officials will be conducting random bike checks for all age categories so please ensure you have the right gearing. You may purchase a SACF rulebook from their offices in Table View.

Apart from the bike checks the officials have decided to penalise any rider who continuously crosses the white middle line during a race and especially in the last few k’s , if you are on the wrong side of the road in the sprint you will be disqualified. Following vehicles are to be discouraged , should you have the need for a following vehicle , the driver must leapfrog ahead of the bunch , only the race ref will be allowed to follow the race. In the seniors race Elfin have donated a back-up vehicle , they have a driver up until the end of May thereafter they will be looking for a volunteer , this vehicle will be available to all riders.

TV

If you see some familiar faces on the box acting like doctors , surgeons , nurses , accountants and riding bicycles don’t be alarmed , some of the cycling fraternity were roped into the world of advertising( keep a look out for the Fedlife ad on TV.

SA Road Champs - Port Elizabeth

There was a record number of entries for this years champs , Robbie Hunter , after finishing third in the Tour of Dunkerque in France , came back to ride as he wants to add the SA title to his CV .Keep a lookout on the World of Endurance or SATV 2’s Sportsnite for coverage of the event. At the same time of the champs , the SACF will be holding an extraordinary congress to discuss transformation in cycling , Hein Kroff and Willie Newman will be representing the Province. In order to assist the SACF , we had to do an audit of the club’s members i.e. number of members , "managers" , technical staff and whether we had a development officer. All this info had to be categorised into ebony and ivory. For the record we have 79 members of which 14 are life members. We can also take this opportunity to request outstanding subs to be paid , if you are not going to license for 2000 you can still be a non-active member - just complete the renewal notice and send the cheque. And while we are on the subject of money , members who are planning to ride in the World Champs have been requested to come to the next club meeting on the 5th June , so far John , Janet Moss and Willie Newman are going to the Track Champs -Manchester , after the SA Roads we might have a few who will make their way to St Johan - Austria. We need to plan and budget.

Club jerseys are available at the princely sum of just R135 - 00 . With the influx of Steve’s and Angus’s skills pupils , Znugglez have had to manufacture xxsmall for the first time in a long time.

As previously mentioned the number of participants have been up on previous years and the juniors and seniors have been racing separately , at the last WP meeting we (City) proposed that the vets be split as well i.e. 30 - 40 and 41+ , here have been murmours from recently retired vets and ones that are currently racing that this arrangement would bring back a lot of the older riders and racing would also be more equitable. A survey of the start sheets at races this season revealed that two races would have more or less the same entries ± 20 each. If you feel strongly about splitting the vets , voice your opinion at the start tables and to the organisers.

Trevor Styles recently set a world record for spinning at the recently held Xtreme sports exhibition below Table Mountain , at the same exhibition Peter Haupt’s son Justin took a bad tumble during the In-line skating race.
