Club Meetings:

Welcome to all new members that have joined or re-joined . For the uninitiated , this is how the club racing scene works: Clubs are affiliated to the WP Cycling Association and not to the PPA . Clubs have agreed to host two track and two road meeting per year . As there are enough clubs to go around each club manages to put on one road race at least before the provincial champs. The track is a different matter as Bellville league is run by Piet Odendaal and Rhadsport have been running a twice monthly meeting out at Paarl on a Saturday afternoon.. We have honored our obligations and hosted our track meeting earlier this year at the Velodrome , you do get slup-gat clubs like Peninsula , Elfin , Worcester and Stellenbosch who would rather pay a fine than host a meeting. When your club hosts a road race , club members are requested to volunteer their services as marshals. One must remember that we are funded entirely by your subscriptions and we spend it as we see fit , new jerseys are available , give Steve Down a call on 462 4190 (office hours only) we need to recoup some of our money. Jerseys cost R150 and now that our colours were prominently displayed in the Giro by our team and especially young Darren Lill in the Argus we are limiting sales to club members only . The inter-club track season is continuing with weekly meetings taking place at the Velodrome and out at the Paarl track. Track champs will be held on 6/7 April out in Paarl.

The road season commences on the 5th May and runs through to the end of August.

We will try and keep you up to date with what is going on via newsletters , those with e-mail facilities will obviously get the news quicker. Club meetings are open to all members and take place on the first working Monday of the month , obviously the meeting before we host a track or road race we discuss who is going to organise what but generally anything may be discussed at the club meeting . One interesting aspect is the amount of correspondence we receive from overseas - an enthusiast from Bangladesh wanted to send a team to take part in our road season (no jokes) at our expense and two Danes were looking for a team to ride for in the Giro. Club members via your club delegate do have a say in how cycling should be run in the Province , for example , Province are asking for suggestions for a route for this years Provincial road champs , the Helshoogte circuit starting from Muldersvlei market has been put forward , this years champs needs to take in a climb or two so bear that in mind should you have any alternative routes.

Le Peleton

For those that would like to get in some spinning sessions and keep up the fitness levels for the road season can make use of Le Peleton’s facilities in Sea Point. We will let you know of the arrangement we have come to with Gary regarding the times and days which the facilities would be available.

Tour d France

Steve Down has been provisionally allocated ten places by a tour operator for a week in the Pyrennes , should you have the desire and the money to follow the Tour as part of a group or know of anyone that would be interested in going to France give Steve Down a call on 462 4190 (o/h) or 558 9190 (home).

Tri - Nations

The Greeks and the young Belgiums found out that the Wildest place in Africa is the Velodrome. The evening ended on a sour note when the Greeks who were assured of their second place refused to contest the last event of the evening , the100 lap Madison as they were on taking part in a more important meeting in Europe in the following days and didn’t want to take a chance of falling - the SACF even reduced the race to 40 laps but they wouldn’t budge. The South African Elite team were just too big and strong for the other teams although the Development team did better than in previous years. Places for the squad to go to the Commonwealth Games in Manchester should be hotly contested.

Criterium Cup , 22nd April 2001

The club are proud owners of a variety of trophies dating back many years , The Connock Bowl and Nimo Trophy for the road champs is currently held by Jeremy Maartens. We need to establish who is the best criterium rider in the club and we have decided to hold the event on Sunday 22nd April , Paarden Eiland , on the road that runs parallel to the N1 , start time 08hrs30. The event will be run on a sealed handicap basis i.o.w. the winning margin is known only to the handicapper. There will be prize money up for grabs and also a magnificent trophy.

Watch out

Shawn Lynch , who was in fine form at the selection races at the Velodrome , but was not selected for the Tri-Nations was found guilty of using the banned substance Stanozolol (say that after a few toots) in an out of competition test. He has been fined R2000 and has been suspended for eight months. Brandon Higgins a rider from Gauteng was tested at the 94.2 Traffic Classic and found guilty (non intentional) of using Ephedrine and has a three month suspended sentence. Booklets are available from the SACF offices regarding what may or may not be used.

Top ten Argus times: 1.Darren Lill 2hrs31 2.David George 2hrs32 3.Mark Wilcox 2hrs32 4.Robby Rodrigues 2hrs38 5.Shaun Rhodes 2hrs42 6.Brian Devenish 2hrs53 7.Andrew Wheeldon 2hrs53 8.Mark Pinder 2hrs55 9.Gerard Genis 2hrs55 10.Lionel Pamemsky 2hrs55 .

WPCA Track Champs 6/7th April

Paarl is the venue for this years champs and will take place on the Friday and Saturday only. The programme for Saturday starts at 10am so get those oxen fed early.

Continental Champs for Seniors/u23’s and Juniors

One can only qualify for the World Cup by gaining enough points in the various accredited world cup races , you can also qualify by being the current Continental champion. Good news is that you can enter as an individual as well. Track will be held at the Krugersdorp Track on the 26/26/27 May , the Time Trial on the 28th and Road Champs on the 29th May in the Pretoria area , these events will not be held over the weekend as the bureaucrats will be waffling on at the Confederation of African Cycling congress. Should you require help with costs to get to these champs , come and state your case at the next club meeting which will be held on the 2nd April.

2001 Subscriptions are due !!!!!!
