Active Life President - Uncle Harry Bairstow
Chairmans report - here are a few extracts (highlights only)from Steves last function as chairman .
The Club survived the Millennium and the leap Year , membership and finances have remained constant (lots of vets min schoolkids and juniors). Johnny Koen submitted a proposal which was accepted at a Special General Meeting by the members whereby he will attract sponsors and new members to the club using the Velo 2000 concept. We have also met with Le Peleton regarding joining forces , so far , Le Peleton raced in the Giro Del Capo under the City Cycling Club license. The club is still in a strong financial position compared to other clubs , if you want to know how much dosh we have in the bank , come to the next meeting. Developmental skills classes have been taking place in the stadium carpark. We , City , proposed at the last WPCA AGM that the various age categories for schoolkids be allowed to use mountain bikes for racing purposes. No news of any further developments regarding Green Point stadium or Bellville Velodrome. The merger of all cycling bodies appears to going ahead. Racingwise Janet Moss won medals at the world Masters , with John Moss and Jason Peisl coming close , all three were awarded South African colours , several medals were won at National and Provincial road and track champs , David George will be retained by US Postal and Jamie Ball will spend another year with Olympic Chamalierois. Track and road races were hosted by ourselves and without being modest we can hold our heads high when it comes to hosting races.
Tri-Nations Track Meet
Garen Bloch of Southern Gauteng carried the South African team in an action packed track meeting , the highlight being his win over the current European champion in the 1k time trial in a time of 1m05s .
Full results:
15k points - Garen Bloch
Elimination - Benoit Genauzeau (France)
1500m - Garen Bloch
Sprint - Michael Quemenere (France)
Olympic Sprint - France
1000m - Garen Bloch
Madison - France
The South African junior team consisting of Alistair v Noorwyk , Wes Cole , Garth Thomas , Marlo Carstens and Dean Edwards and H Roux really rode well and held their own against the seniors , on a sad note Marlo Carstens of Bellville Cycling Club passed away on the 19th March after being hit by a bakkie on the Bottelary Road.
Detour
According to the organisers the "Detour " was a success and together with the Two Oceans Marathon will donate R200 000 towards repairing Chappies. That amount should take care of a few brooms and a week of sweeping away the rubble. Dont be surprised if the De Tour becomes Le Tour for the next few years.
Track Champs on a slow bumpy Pilditch Stadium.6-8th April
Our own Willie Newman was interviewed on SABCs Sportsnite and glimpses from the champs were also shown , what a pity it was on so late at night , the World Sheep Shearing Champs held in Bloemfontein lately got daily coverage on the main news bulletins for a week , I think the staff of the SACF should refrain from writing snotty letters to all and sundry (like the overworked and underpaid race officials) and concentrate on more important matters.
Our national title holders for the next twelve months are:
1000m T/T - Garen Bloch in a time of 1min06sec.
Devil - Norman Lester
Sprint & Kierin went to Shawn Lynch
50km Points - Jacques Fullard
4 Km pursuit - James Perry
Madison - Mario Nel and Tiaan Bosman.
From our club side John , Janet Moss and Willie Newman were in the medals but no golds were won this time round.
Willie has promised that he will tackle a few road races while he is still fit , he says that if we tow him to within one k from the line he will win the sprint ala Cippolini.
Fresh from the Press come the news that Gotty Hansen has been voted in as new chief of the SACF.
Road Season 2000 - The season got under way with our Tour of the Paardeberg , thank-you to all members who marshalled and to Gerard Genis who made some of his staff available on the day.. The racing was held in near perfect conditions and there was a good turnout of cyclists , Richard Rosselt won the Seniors/juniors race , Mark Weedall the Vets and Travis Allen the u16s.

Club Meetings - The next club meeting will be held at the clubhouse Green Point Stadium on the 9th May (this is a Tuesday) , these meetings are not only for the committee but also for members , new chairman John Simpson starts his performance at 8pm sharp. You must remember that the more we put into the sport the more we get out , likewise , the more we put into the club , the more we will get out. Suggestions and proposals from club members will be taken up at the WPCA meetings by the club delegate , for example it is up to the clubs in the WP to suggest a course and venue for the WPCA road champs not the WPCA exco.(Any suggestions) Entry forms for the SA Champs are out so should you be planning on riding in Port Elizabeth come to the next meeting , Im sure there will be others that will be willing to split costs , maybe someone can organise a block booking etc etc. For newcomers to licensed cycling . provincials and nationals are run in age categories , especially the vets section where they go from 30-34 , 35-39 , 40-44 , 45 -49 , 50+ .Entries must be in by the 1st May , with the WPCA secretary Di Roberts , PO Box 202 Table View 7646.so dont delay.
Olympique Chamalierois
Steve Down , John Simpson and Stan Ball (Jamies dad) were instrumental in helping them with transport and extra accommodation while they were taking part in the Giro del Capo, as a token of appreciation they have donated a magnificent bronze trophy in the form of a cyclist to the club , there are no truth in the rumors that Steve and John drank the other gifts. The French team finished in ninth spot ahead of the SA Development squad , other local Cape teams were over the hill and far away , in the wrong direction , so it looks like the SA Development squad learnt something from the Rapport Tour.
Welcome to all the new members (and the old that have rejoined) especially to the youngsters from the skills development classes. Ride safely and wear that helmet.
