City Cycling Club Newsletter :  June 1999

The 21st of June was the shortest day of the year and that means its the official start of winter .National Road Champs have been completed for all categories in Pretoria and Mossel Bay , congratulations to all members who won medals at the champs. WPCA has had their AGM and we will experience another two more years of Hein Kroff’s chairmanship , more news of the AGM later.

DO YOU REMEMBER THEM?

We have had contact from two ex members namely Hilary Kiernan and Bob Theis , Hilary was in the city and made a donation to the club and in return Uncle Harry presented him with a club jersey , Hilary rode for the club in the (we think) sixties and has since returned to his native Ireland ,should you wish to make contact with him you may contact him via email at hilkie@bigfoot.com. Bob Theis , who finished the second edition of the Argus tour in fifth place visited our website recently and is impressed to see members from his time still involved in the club. Incidentally Bob’s wife Janice won the Women’s section of the Argus on two occasions.

Life Member Dirk Versfeld sent the club a donation and on behalf of the club we extend our thanks. All members ,including life members receive newsletters on a regular basis , Dirk mentioned that he appreciates the club keeping him informed of what’s going on in the local cycling fraternity.

You must remember that this is your club and newsletter , we would welcome any contributions ,comments and news for this "publication". If you have any gossip , cycling kit for sale etc give Graham Ward a call ,fax or email : Ph 580 582 Fax 852 9748 email grahamward@mweb.co.za

The next club meeting will be held on 5th July at 7.30 at our Green Point clubhouse all members are welcome to attend .

Here’s something to keep in mind , certain clubs are notorious for cancelling their race at the last minute (Stellenbosch cancelled theirs on the Friday night ,this was after they confirmed that the race was on, on Friday morning) the development committee are investigating implementing something like a hot line where up to date info on racing can be relayed to competitors. The best thing to do is phone the contact person on the calendar provided in the last newsletter , if there are no contact persons or numbers phone Hein Kroff at 892 7773. Find out why Peninsula did not honour their commitments on 26 June later in the newsletter.

SCHOOLS 22 MAY.

Racing on this day was washed out due to bad weather and will be held at the same venue in the middle of July.

BELLVILLE 5 JUNE

The winter tour visited Vissershok for the first time , incidentally the Vets section had an all time record entry of 35 riders. Jamie Ball won the senior section Shaun Rhodes and Peter Wheeler were place 2nd and 3rd respectively(all ex City members.) The Vets section was won by J du Plessis with Gerard Genis 2nd and F Coleske 3rd. Nicky Andrews managed a sixth place in the women’s section. In the u16’s Chris Esch was wearing a winter jacket which obscured his race number and was therefore unplaced by the officials , the official was then verbally attacked by both father and son - the end result - one unhappy official and Chris Esch being suspended for two races , Esch senior got off scott-free because he was only exercising his constitutional rights by protesting the line judges decision. Its about time that the kids raced for gift vouchers instead of money.

SHEEP 1 US Postal 0

In the recent tour of Britain David George riding for US Postal had a bit of bad luck when he collided with a sheep, David sustained a cracked elbow , we wish him a speedy recovery.

At the recent Vets champs in Mossel Bay the 35-39 race was almost interrupted by a horse that had bolted from an adjacent field , we hear it conveniently held up the chasing bunch for a few seconds.

SILVERMINE 22 JUNE

At a well attended circuit race hosted by Elfin , Christopher Shaw won the senior race. In the Vets section Vince Bergh came first with Mike Jones second and John du Plessis third. Scott Atkinson won the Juniors.

Please note that up to date points earnings are available at the registration tables at each race , should you feel that you have earned points in the race take it up with the officials on the day don’t wait until the next week , by that time its too late to correct mistakes.

City members Tony Roberts and John Moss won their age group categories at the recently held Masters Games in Port Elizabeth.

South African Veterans Road & T/T Championships - Mossel Bay 18/19 June

A stiff north-westerly on the nose greeted competitors in the time trials on Friday 18th June , it had everyone searching for bigger combinations at the turn for home.

Hein Kroff a competitor in the road race took one look at the course and decided it would be better to do "it" in his 4x4 . Should you be going to the Knysna funride take note of the climb from Klein Brak back to Hartenbos on the R102 this was just one of the hills we encountered in the road race.

Western Province Cycling Association Annual General Meeting - 21st June 1999.

The following office bearers were elected .

Chairman : Hein Kroff

Treasurer/secretary : Di Roberts

Race organising Secretary : Piet Odendaal

We believe that Willie Newman will be co-opted on to the Exco.

Trevor Hawtrey was awarded Western Province colours for service to the sport of cycling in the province.

The only other excitement to occur on the night was when a letter from Peninsula was read, where they voiced the objections to the way the number of vote were allocated to each club - Peninsula had no vote . They’ve countered the state of affairs by not paying their affiliation fees , not attending the AGM and by cancelling their race on 26/06/99. Who are the losers ? You , the cyclists.

Club Jerseys - Beautifully designed and made by Znugglez , are available from Steve Down at the unbelievable price of only R135.00 call Steve on 58 9490 (after hours) or come to the next club meeting to put in your order , Club winter jackets and tracksuits are also made to order from Znugglez . We also have Centenary sweat shirts still available at R40

There will be a race on 10 July at 2:00pm at Phesantekraal, hosted by WPCA.

Club Champs

Club Road Champs will be held on Sunday 8 August 1999 on the Phesantekraal circuit, starting at 9:00 a.m. All welcome.

Cycling is a marriage between the cyclist , who is somewhat adaptable , and the bicycle , which is somewhat adjustable
