Dont book for the Sun city trip as we have a change of plan , we are planning on hiring a luxury bus to take us to the 94,7 race instead , there will be space for about 35 riders , the trip will be open to all , although club members will get first choice. Memo Cutino and Oscar Ferreira fresh from their trip to the Td France will be putting the whole package together which will include entrance fees and accommodation in a smart hotel. Other members back from their travels around the planet include Graham Ward who escaped to sunny Mauritius for two weeks and Angus Robinson who took five schoolboys from the Saturday mornings skills classes up to the Knysna area for a week of mountain biking.
Some of our veteran members are training hard for the upcoming Vets world champs on the road(Austria) and track(UK) at the end of August and the beginning of September respectively.
If you are not training for the worlds the next best thing to train for will be the Western Province road & time trial champs which will not be held at Club Mykonos as they have withdrawn their sponsorship as the West Coast traffic police are charging R4000 for their services.
The T/T Champs will take place at the four way stop at Fesantekraal on the 19th August. Seniors will ride 40ks , Junior , Vets 30ks , u16s & women 20ks , the rest of the schools categories ride between 10 and 15 kms. Holders of cyclo tourism may also participate . You wont need any fancy supersonic aerodynamic equipment , just your bike and a bit of vasbyt . At one of this years club meetings (City) it was decided that the WP T/T champs will double up as the club champs , if that doesnt entice you to come ride , remember that riding a time trial will give you a good indication of your level of fitness ,you will need a heart rate monitor to measure your average heart rate (lactate threshold) over the distance. Lets see how many wheelsuckers are brave enough to ride in the Race of Truth.
The road champs will be held the following week 26th August , we dont know the venue yet but the course should be flat as last years champs took in Vissershok a few times. Veterans categories are contested in the various age groups taking into account the number of entrants , as we are canvassing the WPCA to split the vets Saturday races into two sections its is imperative that we get a good vets turn out.
The following races will be held in the weeks building up to the champs:
5th August. The Tygerberg Cycling club will hold a three stage race starting at 10am with a time trial on the Contermanskloof Road followed by a hill climb at the entrance to the Bloemendal restaurant , racing will completed in the afternoon with a criterium in Durbanville. There will be over R3000 in prize money , you can contact Chris Willemse at 0836404823 or at Chris Willemse Cycles in Bellville for further details.
12th August Fesantekraal 14hr00pm Worcester Wheelers have only two registered riders so it looks like the WPCA will have to organise this one , if this club doesnt pay its 2000 fees they will be suspended.
Development
Angus Robinson has been elected to chair the development committee , he will be supported by Kevin Green of Yorkshire and Jan Brown of the Schools Association will be the secretary. Western Province recently took about 50 senior and junior schools teams up to the Eric van Enter week in Port Elizabeth , included in the squad were about 12 development riders who attended a week long training camp. Southern Free State who are one of the smallest province came out tops overall with WP ending 3rd or 4th (dispute). To err is human , but hows this for a mistake , race distances at the Eric van Enter were measured in miles using an ancient Datsun bakkie , so 60 ks became 90ks for the u16s - eina - I kid you not. This was only discovered afterwards after some of the riders complained that the finish line wasnt where it was supposed to be.
On the 10th August there will a seminar on track racing at the Bellville Velodrome (7pm) , the club will be sending a delegate however anyone who has the interest of track cycling at heart will be welcome to attend.
On the subject of track racing , Peninsula will be attempting to set a new Junior 3000 individual pursuit , the record is currently held by Garen Bloch at 3m33,03s , riders from Elfin will be attempting to set a new SA record for the distance ridden in one hour , the current holder is James Louter of Kwa/Natal with a distance of 45,490km , the world record is about 10ks further. Well let you know details of the attempts nearer the time.
At the June WP meeting it was decided that promotors of National Classics/funrides (excluding PPA) would be charged an extra R5-00 per rider payable to WPCA - the reason for this is that in other parts of the country promotors - who have nothing to do with the sport - put on a funride and make money out of cycling (one of these rides will be coming up on the West Coast soon , last year Radio5 had one in Franschhoek). Promotors , in order to get road permission would need to get authorisation from the controlling body of the sport in the province i.e. WPCA . WPCA will give permission provided R5-00 per rider is paid over to the WPCA. All the clubs voted in favour of the motion. At the July meeting Chris Willemse - who wasnt at the June meeting - objected to the R5-00 levy as this would mean he would have to pay R100-00 for the twenty riders taking part in his 3 day track international in November .
We wish Hilton Cloete a speedy recovery after his training bunch was taken out by a taxi last weekend , Hilton has a limb in plaster. Be careful out there its a dangerous place.
Peter Wheeler has handed in his racing and managers licence and hung up his bicycles - the reason - he wanted to be the manager of the Junior team that went to Canada for a road race and he also wanted the two Boe/Ryder riders to go to Italy for the junior world track champs straight after the road race , the SACF said they must choose between the road or track . Peter wasnt chosen as the manager and his riders chose to go to Canada where Wesley Cole finished third in the overall classification and South Africa won the team competition. The SACF stuck to their guns regarding the riders taking part in only one discipline which caused Peter to throw his toys about.
The club got a one and two at the recently held Knysna funride with Jamie Ball taking first and young Darren Lill second , Mark Wilcox came in fourth , we havent any other results to hand so we cant congratulate other category winners (if there were any) yet.
The next club meeting will be held on the 7th August at the clubhouse Green Point stadium at 8pm sharp. For first timers (and old timers) use the main gate opposite the Green Point cricket club , if the gate is closed you might have to hoot for security. ALL ARE WELCOME
