CITY RIDERS DESTINED FOR INTERNATIONAL HONOURS

What do Jamie Ball, James Perry, Jeremy Maartens, David George, Douglas Ryder and Darren Lill, apart from being very successful South African bicycle riders, have in common? The answer is that they all started their cycling careers with City Cycling Club. While City by no means claim sole responsibility for their success, we are very proud that we can say that City started them on to the road to becoming competent racing cyclists.

The latest City riders destined for success are two junior riders, Dean Hopf and Luthando Khaka, both of whom are attending training and selection camps under the SACF Development programme. Both riders have been selected to ride for South Africa in a junior tour in Canada later this month and are on the short list for the Junior Commonwealth Games.

WPCA WINTER LEAGUE

The Carbostax Criterium Series – 29 May

The first event in this series was held in ideal conditions around CVT head offices in Killarney Gardens with the home straight packed with spectators. Racing was, as you can imagine, hard and fast with all categories racing at full throttle.

In the U16s race young Sven Heinsohn of the Hottentots Holland CC was squeezed into the gutter in the final sprint and was unfortunate to take a tumble into the crowd where he collided with a spectator who then had an epileptic fit. Fortunately the paramedics on duty were able to stabilize both patients. All other categories were raced in a good spirit although there was one minor fall in the Junior/Senior race involving a rider from Maties.

Paarl Road Race – 5 June

It seems that every year at least one race is cancelled because of inclement weather. Traffic officials deemed that the weather conditions were too dangerous for the Paarl race to start. This could have been a blessing in disguise as it enabled riders to take it easy before tackling a very tough course that was planned for the WP Road Champs the following week.

Western Province Road Champs – 12 June

For the first time the WP Champs were “open” which allowed riders from any province to take part. Most categories had to race over various combinations of a big loop of 40 km and a small, but tougher loop of 26 km. Racing was held in ideal conditions and over 174 riders contested the various categories.

City rider Craig Butland of the CVT/CSC racing team was crowned 2004 WP Elite Road Champion. Craig won by over two minutes from his team mate Simon Brown.

In the Junior race our members were once again dominant with Dean Hopf wining the bunch sprint ahead of Jaco Venter of H2C2.

Fifteen young ladies went to the line to contest the Women’s Championship with the top two places going to two riders who don’t normally contest the winter League.

After riding an attacking race City’s Charl le Roux still had enough speed left to out sprint Gerhard Genis and claim the Senior Veterans Championship.

 Results:

Elite: 1st Craig Butland (City); 2nd Simon Brown (City); 3rd John Ray Cox (City); 4th Jason Berry (City); other City riders 11th Clyde Mallon; 13th Alistair Davies; 16th Patrick Majeke; 20th Karl Hvidsten.

Juniors: 1st Dean Hopf (City); 3rd Theo Cronje (City); other City riders: 4th Luthando Khaka; 9th Stefan Lombard; 10th Michiel Du Toit.

Women: 1st Hanlie Booysens; 2nd Hannele Steyn-Kotze; 3rd Kelly Tome; City riders: 12th Nicolene Andrews (City)

Senior Vets: 1st Charl Le Roux (City); 2nd Genis (Outriders); 3rd Kenneth Cooper (Outriders); other City riders: 6th John Moss, 9th Bert Correia, 11th Graham Ward, 12th Ian Gordon, 13th Terry Burrell.

Under 16s: 1st R Matthuysen (Paarl); 2nd Marius Bester (Paarl); 3rd Quintus Delport (Paarl); City riders: 4th Mathew Wentworth, 11th Laine Alexander.

Under 14s:1st Bernard Venter; 2nd Grant Stuurman; Johan van Zyl; City riders: 14th  DP Louw (City).

Well done to all our members who were able to finish this grueling championship course. If you are looking for the Junior Vets results you won’t find it as this race was called off because of cyclists constantly riding on the wrong side of the road. There has been a debate regarding the “no” result and some clubs have corresponded with the WPCA. The consensus is that the race will be held later in the year at one of the winter league road events. A final decision will be made once the Province has a meeting with the WP Officials Association and the race referee.

 VETERANS’ AND WOMEN’S TOUR

The PPA will be organizing the very popular Veterans’ and Women’s Tours in September and October. The provisional dates are: Senior Vets / Masters will be held on the weekend of 18/19th September. Junior Vets / Women’s Tour is scheduled for the 16/17 October. These dates are provisional and if there are any changes we will let you know immediately. Members who want to form a City team in the various categories kindly contact Andrew Mearns on 671 3367 or 082 421 6530 or Andrew@zsd.co.za or John Moss 422 5020 or john.moss@absamail.co.za.

 RACE MARSHALLS

Our thanks go to all our members who have given up their spare time to marshal at the events where we have been asked to supply marshals. Some clubs have just not pulled their weight in this regards and their commitment to cycle racing in the Province must be questioned.

KNYSNA

Robbie Rodrigues, who has just rejoined City, was 5th in the Elite race after being in the winning break with three Microsoft professionals. Stuart Lemanski came in a creditable 28th and old man John Moss in 62nd position.

Kevin Evans, who is a City member and rides for the Vineyard Hotel team was 2nd in the 85 km Mountain Bike Race. Kevin was in the lead for most of the race but was out sprinted by John Lee-Augustine in the final dash for the line.

WINTER TRAINING.

With the cold and sometimes wet weather at this time of the year it is very important to dress correctly whilst out training to avoid colds and injury. Wear a ventilated and breathable vest that will keep the surface of your skin dry and warm by absorbing the moisture, built up by perspiration, through the fabric to the next layer of clothing. These vests are not cheap but are a worthwhile investment and they seem to last forever. Over the vest wear either a long sleeved fleecy lined racing jersey (long sleeved City/CSC jerseys are available) or a racing jersey with arm warmers (City/CSC arm warmers are available). Over the top of your jersey wear a gillet (City/CSC gillets are available) these sleeveless lightweight windjammers are ideal for keeping warm on the descents. They are able to cope with the wind chill factor yet you will not overheat (due to their ventilated backs and sleeveless design) when the temperature warms up or on a climb. Gillets are also shower proof. All these layers of clothing must cover the small of your back to be effective. If it is very cold to keep warm on the descents put a sheet of newspaper in between your jersey and vest. Once into your ride and conditions get warmer the newspaper can be easily disposed of. An ordinary pair of woolen gloves is usually sufficient to keep the hands warm on Cape winter’s day. Cover the ears with a headband but make sure that you can still here the traffic. Wear leg warmers as it is very important to keep the leg muscles, ligaments and tendons warm to avoid injury.  On a dry but cold day an old pair of socks with holes cut for the cleats works just as well as neoprene booties in keeping the feet warm. But if you ride in the cold and wet you may need to splash out and buy a pair of neoprene booties.

MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD CHAMPS

City members Geddan Ruddock and Kevin Evans, who both ride for the Vineyards Hotel racing team, have been selected to represent South Africa in the Marathon and Cross Country World Championships in Austria and France. Unfortunately because of work commitments Geddan, who came 2nd in the SA National Championships, cannot go.

Geddan is opening a bike shop up in Franschhoek call Manic Cycles.

 WPCA AGM – 19th July 2004 20h00 Bellville Velodrome

We believe that the present Chairman – Hein Kroff – will be standing down and with Di Roberts resigning earlier in the year a new executive committee will need to be elected.

As well as club delegates any club member is welcome to attend the AGM.

CITY WEBSITE

City Website is up and running on http://home.intekom.com/Newmax/citycycling/index.htm

CITY MEMBER HIT BY CAR
On of our lady members, Lindi Benic, was hit by a car on Sunday 4 July and broke her leg plus her bike was a write off. Lindi had arranged to go to Europe and watch the Tour de France but due to the accident she has had to cancel.  We wish her a speedy recovery.

NOCSA KNOCKS SA OUT OF THE MADISON

City rider Robbie Dale and JP van Zyl failed to qualify SA for the Athens Olympic Madison at the recent world championships. Both riders were not at their best as they were suffering the after effects of flu. The SACF asked the UCI for a wild card entry and were informed that South Africa had been accepted for the Madison event. JP van Zyl was going to team up with Robbie Hunter for the Olympic Madison. Unfortunately NOCSA did not approve the wild card entry and SA will not have a team in the Madison at the Olympics. Robbie Hunter will still ride the Olympic road race along with Tiaan Kannemeyer and Ryan Cox.
