City Cycling Club Newsletter :  July 2001

1st July – Sacks Circle

A fine windless morning , somewhat nippy , but only three club members and one official were at the start of Nick the Demon . You snooze , the club was prepared to put up R300 as prize money for the various winners , you lose.

Club Races have been put on hold for the rest of the year , if you have any objections let the club know!!!!!

Seniors/Juniors

With the amalgamation of City and Cycle Lab , one of the aims will be to put into place a racing team to contest the PPA’s Super League , The Giro , the Rapport Tour (if there is one) and various up country classics. We are obviously going to look at our current members first. You won’t get noticed sitting at home on a Saturday , so come and take part in the Saturday club races. If you are not up to scratch , we have plans to appoint someone to manage and coach you up to the right level .

Club Jerseys

We never thought we would get into a situation where we run out of jerseys , but that’s the case. All our prints that were made when the club changed its design in ±1992 have been used up , for our manufacturers to have new prints made now for a small order would put the price of a club jersey into orbit. We are now going to design a new jersey for the new club – after getting a major sponsor(s) (be positive) – so those of you that have paid for jerseys, hang in there you are first in the queue for new jerseys. Any aspiring cycle jersey designers out there are welcome to submit designs to the club , also remember we have to have a new club logo and badge.

Tim Carter , Angus Robinson and John Moss have been showing the Vets how to climb in the recent races held in the mountains of the southern suburbs , most of the top three places have been dominated by our members . Mark Wilcox ,Willie van Zyl and Robbie Rodrigues have been holding their own in the seniors race as has Amanda Kropmann in the Womens section.

Venue and route up-dates

The Tygerberg Cycling club pulled a Peninsula and cancelled their race at the last minute , Stellenbosch still have to notify the province of their routes and start venues , hopefully we will know before this goes to print.

Take note that Paarl CC will hold their race around the Paardeberg circuit , the start and finish will be at the Boland Agricultural School .

Western Province Champs will not be going over Helshoogte as some of the roads that need to be ridden on are still under repair so the champs will take place at the same venue and route as the Paarl race ,( Paardeberg ) it is very important to note that the times will differ from the normal Saturday start of 2.00pm and will start at earlier.

We don’t want to steal anyones thunder but some very important happenings are going to take place for this upcoming funride season.

We hear that the Burger will outdo the Argus and plough money back to the cyclists and not to some well-deserving poor charity.

We hear that there will be pro-like teams contesting the Super League , Are we going to be there? Are there enough decent cyclists to go around

Will the whispers about a vets super league be confirmed.

Last years Champs in Port Elizabeth had a record entry , we believe that the Kimberley SA’s are going to be the biggest ever , now to organize more than a five minute slot on the World of Endurance

Merger

For those that have been wondering about the "merge" , its still on and there is no going back now , we just need to find time between cycling , making a living and putting the kids to bed.to sort out The constitution , club colours , badge and jersey design , who will make the jerseys , what will happen to the trophies amongst other things. We won’t say no to any help .

Watch this space for an announcement that is going to rock the socks off the sport of cycling in this Province
