First things first, apologies for the lateness of the Nov/Dec newsletter, blame it on the festive season and annual leave etc, etc.1999 is upon us, you have all received renewal notices with regards to club subs, dont delay pay. There are some exciting events taking place for members early in the new season, check out the VIP DATES and you would need to be licensed so if that blue form has been stuck away in some drawer get it filled in and send it away. Our postal address is still the same P O Box 1721, Cape Town 8000.
Should you have any queries regarding the club, events, etc etc you can contact the following persons:

WE ARE ON THE INTERNET! Progress and time stands still for no one. Thanks to Willie Newman, the club has it own webpage, suggestions and comments will be welcomed, go check it out at http://home.intekom.com/Newmax/citycycling/
Unlike some other clubs on the Internet, our site is going to be updated as often as possible and ultimately will be a window to what is going down in cycle racing in the Cape.
The clubs ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING will be held at the clubhouse on Monday 1st March 1999 at 20hrs00, our hardworking chairman and his committee really need your support so please make an extra special effort to be there.
The club extends its condolences to Uncle Harry Bairstow whose wife Laurel passed away recently. The club also learnt of the passing away of life members Sid Rose and Wally Rivers during 1998.
THE MANNE ARE ON THE MOVE - do you remember those u16 lighties that used to kill the Vets on some Saturday afternoons, well, they will be campaigning in Gauteng this year and then they will hopefully be more ambitious and set their sights on the big E. Daniel Spence will be riding for Lotus, Jeremy Maartens for AIG, James Perry for REF and we believe that Jamie Ball will still be riding for BOE/Wheeler/Ryder. David George has landed a big contract with the European based US Postal team. Good luck and best wishes to all of you.
In December of 1998 the head honchos of the SACF and PPA issued a joint statement to the effect that cycling will fall under one umbrella body which will administer Track and Road racing, funrides, BMX and mountain biking. The organisation will be called Cycling South Africa, we await with bated breath regarding the mechanics of the organisation, Im sure a lot more info will be available when the clubs AGM comes around, so if you want to know whats going on in cycling dont miss the AGM.
All Cyclo Tourism Licences are only valid for one year, if you got yours because you took part in the VETS and Womens 4 Day last year you will have to upgrade to a full licence should you wish to take part in registered rides (this includes the Vets and Womens Giro coming up soon in March)
At a well attended PAARL BOXING DAY meeting ,( rider and spectator-wise) our club was well represented and our riders did us proud. In the 10kilo points race Jamie Ball placed first James Perry second and Peter Wheeler third. After a spectacular prang James Perry pipped Mools on the line to take the Devil, in the Mile Invitation Charl, son of Kenny Jubber beat Norman, son of Jackie Lester in a most exciting sprint. In the Big one Jamie Ball was unable to equal City cyclists Dave Rees in the 1890s and Ted Clayton in 193435 of consecutive wins in the 25 miler. With 18 laps to go Peter Wheeler and James Perry broke away and with the bunch unable to co-ordinate a chase James won going away. Will James Perry be able to do it in 99?
Willie Newman and Janet Moss also got on to the podium. By the way, the press coverage was putrid to say the least, with only the Burger giving a decent report of the meeting.
In the last newsletter it was reported that our clubhouse was broken into, well, we have recovered a few items, traffic cones, marshal bibs and flags were discovered in the treasurers garage, and its been there since our road race in August last year. We havent been able to do a proper stock take since the burglary as we have been denied access to our clubhouse for the last two monthly meetings, in December Studs to Duds or was it Boyz to Men were building their stage and some heavy dudes were guarding the gate, Graham, Stan and Willie had to restrain Steve from tearing them apart. In January, the security were celebrating "Vierde Nuwe Jaar" and no matter how long we hooted we couldnt get someone to respond, so the old Seagulls have had the honour of hosting our last two meetings. Kindly note that committee meetings are open to all members (including committee members) and are held on the first Monday of the month.
On the 13th of Feb the Province is hosting selection races at Bellville Velodrome, all the top track riders should be in town, there will be events for the age categories, women and vets between the main races, also on the programme will be non-cycling entertainment, so it promises to be a very entertaining afternoon. Every second Sunday, starting from the 7th February, Elfin Cycling Club are hosting a Kermesse series at Gunners Circle, 15hr00,there will be points down to 10th place and hotspot laps, inquiries to K Mathews 082 801 2970.
The PPA in conjunction with the Vets and Womens Cycling Ass. are putting on a four day tour from the 9th to the 12th March for veteran men and junior/senior/veteran women, distances will vary from 70k to 90k a day and it will be a massed start with the various categories taken care of at the finish. Inquiries to the PPA or Sterilize Benardie 887 2491. Take note that the tour will be restricted to 120 riders so get those entry forms in early to avoid disappointment.
