102nd BOXING DAY- TRACK MEETING
Phew!Hot! weather for mad dogs and Englishmen. The mad dog was Ashley Kulsen of Rhadsport who rode Wesley Cole into the fence in the final straight of the juniors 1500m race , Englishmen there were aplenty but the most notable one was Phil Liggett of T'd France fame. The bookie smiled all the way to the bank ,all the money was on Dougie Ryder to win the 25 miler, but Jamie Ball outsprinted Mools to win with junior Garth Thomas filling third , the foreigners did a Roberto Duran (no mas , no mas) when James and Mools attacked with a few laps to go.

Port Elizabeth Track Meeting
Willie Newman travelled up to the Eastern Cape to take part in their meeting and came away with the trophy for the best veteran cyclist on show, winning the 1500m and sprint. Neither the line judges nor the cameras could separate Willie and Kenny Jubber in the semi-final of the sprint so they had to contest a ride-off to see who would meet Wendell Bole in the final. Charl Jubber won all his events including the 25 miler where he lapped the field. He must be looking forward to the selection races coming up at the end of February
Garth Thomas and Travis Allen of the WP were voted the best junior and u16 respectively.
Development
Heres something that people with development portfolios at the PPA and SACF should take note of . Since October of last year City Cycling and more specifically Steve Down and Angus Robinson have been putting a group of youngsters through their paces in the car park of Green point stadium , teaching them bike handling skills etc the drills that they are doing have been taken from coaching manuals acquired from the British and Australian cycling federations. Steve and Angus will be showing off the kids at some of the funrides coming up before the Argus , lets give them our support at the funrides , they really deserve it . If you want to give them a hand refer youngsters ,sponsors etc to them for training give Steve a call on 462 4190 (offices hours) or 58 9490 (home).
This is what development is all about .
Renewal of Subs/licenses
Renewals have been trickling slowly but surely , there's no cut-off date , but for every 10 licensed members as at the end February the club (you) has one vote. This will be the second year that this system will be in operation , last year we had managed to register just over 20 riders (2 votes) at the deadline but by the time road racing was in full swing we had over 40 (potentially 4 votes).
Meetings
Club meetings are open to all and take place on the first Monday of the month at the Green Point Stadium and starts at 8 p.m. sharp , as are WPCA monthly meetings on the third Monday at the Velodrome.
Track racing
A calendar of events has been attached for your attention , the Velodrome is going to available at least once a week for training and racing up to the end of February , we will be updated as to the availability of the track on a month to month basis , details will be passed on to you in the newsletter or through the cycling grapevine. WP track champs will take place after the Argus on 16-18th March at the Velodrome.
Please remember that you need to take part in at least 50% of meetings on the calendar in order to take part in the champs . So that means you can't rush a license application through in the week before the champs and expect to snatch all the medals without doing your bit throughout the season. The same will apply for the road season .
In last months newsletter the date for the track races to select a team for the international in March is wrong , the correct date is the 26th February.
January 2000 WPCA Meeting
At the recently held WP monthly meeting Craig Hawtrey of the officials association stated that some of the prize winners at the Boxing Day meeting were not dressed appropriately (beach bum , hobo were mentioned). If any of us are good/lucky enough to get on a podium at a WPCA/SACF track meeting or road race , wear a tracksuit or just stay in your racing gear. Don't hire the tux beforehand , thats being presumptuous , unless your name is Gerard Genis.
1999 League (Road)
Should you reckon that you have money owing to you from the last road season you may collect it from Piet Odendaal at the Velodrome at the track league meeting. Piet is normally there from about 18hrs45.
Drivers wanted
The racing club that Jamie Ball rode for in Clermont-Ferrand will be taking part in the Giro Del Capo and they require back-up people (masseurs , mechanics etc ), I think Oscar Ferreira is going to drive the bakkie which was arranged by John Simpson , a chance to watch the racing from close up. The organisers of the Giro also require help in this regard for other teams , give Tony Roberts a shout at the PPA offices. Remember the Giro does not form part of the Big One this year so you wont miss the Argus.
Cycling SA
The agreement will be signed at the end of February and there will be an official announcement at the Argus. Dont hold your breath.
Development Team WP
The selection races were held recently in and around Paarl and Durbanville and confirmed that there is really no depth of talent in the Province , but we have to start somewhere. The team and development squad are going to attend training camps and take part in a few upcountry Classics as well . Should a team be required for next year we won't have to start from scratch.
Super League
Is the PPA becoming a cosy exclusive club? Should you have crashed , punctured or not have bothered to ride the "Holy Grail" of funrides , you won't qualify to ride in the Super League , unless you are connected. If you are brave enough to squeal and shout "thats not cricket old chap" the PPA will send your application to a seeding committee (I bet thats news to you as well) if you are lucky you will be asked to attend Killarney where the "Don" will assess you. Solution !! A,B and/or SACF licence holders. You'll still get the same riders , give or take a few .
One for the girls.
Michelle Wilsnagh of UCT Cycling mentioned at the WPCA meeting that the women would rather race with the Vets on a Saturday afternoon instead of the u14's , Jeanine Brown of the VWCA replied that they would if there were sufficient numbers. Come on girls , start networking , there are sufficient numbers to warrant a separate race.
Le Peleton
I've left the best for last , we are busy talking to Gary from Le Peleton regarding joining forces with Johnnie Koen should all parties agree then we will have the potential to become the club that cyclists , the world over , would give their back wheel for.
For more news and views attend your club meeting on 7th February
