City Cycling Club Newsletter :  February 2000

Lets get the important things out of the way in date order

Saturday 26 February -Selection races Bellville Velodrome

Racing starts at 12 noon , Elite , Development and Junior national teams are going to be selected to take on two international teams on the 10th March at the velodrome , so expect some desperate and exciting racing. All other categories will be catered for as filler in events.

Bellville Cycling host the Hennie Binneman Memorial meet at the same venue the next day (11am).

Monday 6th March -AGM at the clubhouse Green Point stadium.

Notices were sent out with the last newsletter , our hardworking committee need your support , I hope I’m not being presumptuous but most of last years committee will again be available to carry on , negotiations to extend facilities to you are at a delicate stage and decisions affecting you will have to taken in the near future , all of this will discussed . Refreshments will be freely available.

Members have been invited to join up with Le Peleton for their Saturday and Sunday rides starting from Le Peleton at the end of Regents road Sea Point (Spar centre , 7am) all levels of cyclist are welcome.

The Argus

Thanks to a small minority in Hout Bay Cape Towns hospitals and trauma centres have been spared a busier than usual 12th March , go easy on the valiums for the first 40k’s.

Track champs 16-18 March

Good luck to all members participating in the Western Province track champs at the Velodrome.

Gossip

Mr Daniels and van der Merwe of Yorkshire have been banned - the reason - (use your imagination) from all future development meetings , in future all their suggestions and complaints will have to be directed through Gilbert Arendse , Yorkshire’s delegate.

NOCSA - Olympics

No track , road or MTB cyclists , male or female have qualified to represent South Africa in the Sydney Olympics there still seems to be hope because NOCSA have arranged for a training camp for cycling to be held

2-5th March at the Velodrome. The only way for our cyclists to qualify is via the Continental system i.o.w. you have to be the continental(African) champion . The All Africa Games held late last year doubled up for cycling as the continental champs as well.If the continental system is accepted then riders world rankings and international performances will be taken into account. The only other possibility of getting riders to Sydney is that the RSA is ranked no 31 in the world , the first 30 have automatically qualified various numbers of cyclists , if any of these countries do not fill their places by the 15th July then the RSA will be allowed to fill in. The sole decision will rest with NOCSA should vacancies arise. SACF’s main medal hope is still busy flushing banned substances from his system and won’t even make the selection races , never mind Sydney.

UNION CYCLISTE INTERNATIONALE

The UCI celebrates its centenary this year and have decided to create a world Cycling Centre which will incorporate the following: Administration centre , indoor wooden velodrome (200m)(phew) , outdoor facility and a training centre for all cycling disciplines. This has caused an extra payment to affiliation fees by the SACF , be ready for an increase in our fees to cover this increase. Continental centres are on the cards as well and Egypt and South Africa (Cape Town) have been identified by the UCI on the African continent .

The SACF have drawn up a proper calendar for all cycling events held countrywide and they have the backing of the national traffic authorities , their aim is to produce one fixture list which will be the only official racing calendar. This calendar will be sent to all the relevant national traffic & provincial authorities , an event not on the calendar cannot be held under the auspices of the SACF and will not be recommended by the SACF with the traffic authorities , if you have already licensed this year and have received your calendar you will have noticed that there no races to be held in the Western Province - that's just the result of the laid-back attitude of the Cape. Following the calendar , the SACF want the organisers of the events on the Racing calendar to submit within two days a complete list of competitors and a complete result sheet. That means all finishers will have to placed , maybe the league system will operate this season as it was to suppose to operate when it was originally proposed.

Interprovincials

Mr Bart Harmse of Mpumalanga is going to establish an interprovincial competition , six in the North and six in the South , these dates will be determined at the Annual General Meeting of the SACF , no mention was made of which discipline (road or track) the competitions will be applicable to.

Rapport / Vodacom Tour

According to some members of the fifth estate , tour winner Steinhauser has fallen in love with this country and cannot wait to return , while the Telekom team manager wants to buy a house in the Cape , he is impressed with the cycling conditions -roads , weather , friendly people and a police escort when the team went training .I kid you not. The latest news we have regarding the development team is that five out of the six completed the tour , a mean achievement .
