City Cycling Club Newsletter :  August 1999

At the last monthly meeting of the clubs in the Province , the lack of effective communication between clubs and the WPCA was highlighted , the result is as follows:

Changes to the racing calendar:

28th August : The racing on this day will be hosted by WPCA and will start at the 4 Way stop Fesantekraal , the course will be from the 4 way , past the silos to Malmsbury and on to the Paardeberg circuit (twice for seniors) and then back to the start/finish at the 4 way.

29th August - Club Champs has been postponed to Sunday 26th September

4th September remains the same , we are hosting the racing on this day.

11th September : There is a PPA Super League Fun Ride in Worcester no WP Road Champs.Yorkshire will also be hosting their race outside Foodworld in Klein Drakenstein and is being held to celebrate the club’s 80th anniversary.Extra prize money is on offer for all categories.

12th September (Sunday) WP Road Champs - New Street , Durbanville.

Seniors will start at 12noon and Vets at 1400hrs , other categories will commence at 10minute intervals after the Vets. Remember the club’s restricted gear 16k T/T will not be held.

19th September : The Time Trial Champs have been moved from Saturday 18th to Sunday 19th to accommodate another PPA Super League Fun Ride. The venue and the times remain the same.

26th September : Club Champs .We believe that Peninsula won’t hold there race on the Saturday so there will be no rides at all in the Cape , so see you at New Street , Durbanville for a 0830am start(70ks)

2nd October : Rhadsport - Market Street , Paarl 1400hrs start .

9th October : Paarl - Round the Mountain. The start will not be in front of the Town Hall as the route has been changed from previous years and will not go round the mountain . The start venue will be the same as Rhadsport’s (Market Street) and this race will conclude the road season.

Any Volunteers

The Wednesday Killarney sessions will start again on the 10th October.

Its an Illusion

The Tygerberg Festival of Cycling which will incorporate the Burger/Sanlam to be held at the Velodrome 11 - 13 November has been made to disappear. Where will it re-appear is anyone's guess , you could ask the man responsible illusionist David Copperfield ,the Velodrome itself is still doing a good impersonation of a cycling venue.

Results

24 July Redhill - UCT senior section was won by R. Wentzel with J Perry coming in second , J du Toit won the juniors with Mark Weedall winning the Vets section

31 July Bellville hosted this one and there was a last minute change to the route , the traffic police won’t allow cycling on the R44 , and we were made to go out to the Paardeberg circuit from the 4 Way .

7 August Paarl - this was washed out by the weather

14 August City - this was the first time that this venue was used by the club and it proved a very testing course especially with a slight crosswind blowing on most of the route. Thanks to all members , family and friends who did marshalling duty. Chairman Steve managed to obtain a case or two of red wine from Sonop wine estate so a "king of the mountains " prime was held on the biggest hill , with bottles of wine going to the first three places in the senior and vets races, for the record the thirstiest riders were Jeremy Maartens in the seniors and Johan du Plessis in the vets .
